It was the final start of the season for Velasquez, who was shut down by the Phillies to preserve his arm after throwing a career-high 130 innings this season.I completely understood from the beginning (what the plan was), Velasquez said. It was a big workload on my arm. It had a toll on me, so I completely understand this decision.Braves rookie John Gant allowed three earned runs in five innings, striking out six while throwing a career-high 113 pitches.STATSEnder Inciarte extended his hitting streak to 14 games. George Groves opponent Eduard Gutknecht has undergone surgery after falling ill after their fight last night.Groves beat the 34-year-old super-middleweight by unanimous decision at Wembleys SSE Arena, following which Gutknecht was taken to hospital.Gutknecht is sedated and will continue to be monitored in the coming days, according to the British Boxing Board of Control.Gutknecht took significant punishment throughout the one-sided fight before Groves, 28, was declared a 119-109, 119-109 and 119-110 winner on the three judges scorecards to remain in contention for an expected fourth shot at a world title in 2017.Concerns almost immediately turned to Gutknecht, however, when reports of his condition emerged. He was already clearly losing the fight against the heavy-handed Groves when a cut opened up around his swollen left eye in the ninth round, further reducing his ability to defend himself. He impressed in surviving until the final bell despite Groves consistent aggression and did not appear distressed while the scorecards were announced. It was afterwards in his changing room when his condition declined, leading to him requiring medical attention and swiftly being taken away in an ambulance.According to the BBBofC, it was after that point that Gutknecht -- born in Kazakhstan but who fights out of Germany -- was operated on.At the same venue in March, English middleweight Nick Blackwell collapsed at the end of his stoppage defeat by Chris Eubank Jnr. He suffered bleeding on his skull and was treated at St Marys hospital in Paddington where he eventually recovered, despite having to retire.More recently in September, Scottish welterweight Mike Towell died just 25 hours after losing to Dale Evans in Glasgow. He had suffered severe bleeding and swelling to his brain.Speaking before Gutknecht was taken ill, Groves told Channel 5: I am very happy with how I fought, it went exactly to plan. I set a great tempo and busted him up badly. I am surprised he made it to the bell -- Gutknecht is a tough character. We want real, big, proper fights. There was no world title on the line, but we knew Gutknecht was going to give me a tough fight. After reports of Gutknechts condition emerged, Groves cancelled plans to discuss his performance at a post-fight press conference, considering it inappropriate.Victory is expected to earn him a shot at the vacant WBA super-middleweight title next year. Lleyton Hewitt wont stand in Nick Kyrgioss way if Australian tenniss walking headline makes good on his promise to pursue a professional basketball career.Kyrgios gave Australia a dream start to the World Group playoff against Slovakia on Friday before reminding fans he only had a five-year window to help win back the Davis Cup.Kyrgioss 6-3 6-2 6-4 victory over Andrej Martin on Friday earned Australia a 1-0 lead in Sydney before Bernard Tomic made it 2-0 with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 6-4 win over Jozef Kovalik. But Kyrgioss clinical display was overshadowed by another vow to leave tennis behind for his other sporting love.Im only playing for another four, five years, he mumbled when asked about Australias long-term prospects with he and Tomic spearheading the team.Kyrgios pledge comes after the controversial star raised eyebrows last month when he revealed to the New York Times he planned on retiring by age 27.Kyrgios also teased his Twitter followers with a promise to quit tennis if hed won the US Open this month.Hewitt is unsure how serious Kyrgioss threats are.Hes probably having fun with you guys. I think he gets a bit of a laugh from some of the stuff you write and he throws it out there, said the Australian captain.Hewitt, though, admitted he hoped Kyrgios would stick around - but only if his heart was in it.As long as hes playing top quality tennis, he said. But you dont want him playing tennis for the wrong reasons, either. A lot can happen in four or five years. Hes only 21.Tomic, who often plays basketball with Kyrgios, said his teammate had been invited to feature in the NBA All Stars celebrity game next year.Hopefully he can score a few points there. Nick is very good at basketball. Very good, Tomic said.Asked if he felt Kyrgios could make a career of basketball, Hewitt said: Well, put it this way. He destroys (Gael) Monfils - and Monfils can play.Never a dull moment, Kyrgios also had to overcome a nose bleed during the third set of his win over Martin and couldnt help but take a pot shot at world No.1 Novak Djokovic after refusing to let the distraction stop him.Djokovic was criticised for taking a medical time-out to have his toes taped while trailing Stan Wawrinka by two sets to one and a service break in last weeks US Open final.Kyrgios opted only to have running repairs, with tissues placed in his nostril during a changeover before he completed his straight-sets win.Im not like trying to do a Novak at the US Open, he said.Like, Ive got a blood nose, mate. Ive got to fix it. I cant play with blood coming out of my nose.I mean, I want to play. I dont want to take breaks. It was tough. It breaks the momentum. Obviously, the other guy doesnt really know whats going on either.I want to get the match going as quickly as possible as anyone. I dont want to hang around. Not on Friday and not for more than five years, it seems. But the NFL announced Monday morning that Elliott would not be fined for the celebration.I mean its just sitting there right in the end zone, you know. Its the perfect celebration, Elliot said after the game. Theyre one of our biggest partners, so I had to show them a little bit of love.He tweeted Monday that he still planned to make a donation to the Salvation Army.Elliotts score broke Tony Dorsetts team record for most touchdown runs by a rookie in Dallas history. The 2-yard run on third-and-goal gave the Cowboys a 10-3 lead in the second quarter. If the Cowboys were upset with the penalty, they didnt show it. Management allowed the celebration to be shown on the center-hung digital board before the ensuing kickoff. They were made even happier after the Buccaneers next drive started at their 22 and the Dallas defense forced the Bucs into a three-and-out.Cowboys owner Jerry Jones also seemeed fine with the rookie rushers celebration.ddddddddddddI think the Salvation Army should give him the highest award, Jones said after the game. My dream would be for the NFL to really fine me a lot of money and Ill take them to the Supreme Court and well get the Salvation Army more attention than anybody can get them. So lets go.Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant didnt see an issue with the celebration, saying Why not let it be legal? Were just having fun. Lets not make it the No Fun League.Asked if he would hop into the kettle again, Elliott said it was a one-time gesture. No, [Cowboys coach Jason Garrett] wasnt happy about it with the penalty for special teams, Elliott said. Him or the special-teams coach wasnt happy, so I cant keep making them mad.Garrett explained his reasoning for dampening the celebratory mood.Well, he shouldnt have done it. I thought it was creative, but he shouldnt have done it, Garrett said. You know thats how the league is going to rule on those things. You have to understand whats legal and whats not legal. You can jump into the stands in Green Bay, but you cant jump into a Salvation Army bucket in Dallas. Youve got to be careful about snow angels. All of these different things that we do. So we have to be more mindful of that. Ive got to coach that better. ' ' '

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Chicago Bears wide receiver Kevin White will be placed on injured reserve with a fractured left fibula, costing him much of the season after missing his entire rookie season with a stress fracture in the same leg.White was injured Sunday in a 17-14 victory over the Detroit Lions. In addition to the broken bone, White suffered a high ankle sprain as he was tackled during the third quarter.White leads the Bears this season in receptions with 19, and has 187 receiving yards. The seventh overall draft pick in 2015, he went on IR during the preseason last year because of left shin injury.Coach John Fox characterized the latest injury as a spiral fracture and said White could come off IR late in the season. This injury is not nearly as serious as the last one, Fox said Wednesday. Its a completely different bone in the lower leg.White was gradually picking up the NFL game and had six catches Sunday against the Lions. Fox called it Whites best game and quarterback Brian Hoyer agreed.Just as a football player, football awareness, catching the ball, really everywhere he was making strides each week, Hoyer said. So I know thats disappointing for him.Missing most of his first two seasons could lead to a problem in Whites development. Fox said his own experience with Denver receiver Demaryius Thomas keeps him from selling players short due to missed time early in their careers. He (Thomas) probably didnt do a whole lot until year three, Fox said. He had setbacks and he was injured coming out of college. He had an Achilles injury after that and a finger injury after that and he had two surgeries in his first year and a half of NFL football. Hes turned out pretty good. With White gone, Bears backups Cameron Meredith and Josh Bellamy will be called on to make bigger contributions at wide receiver to provide a counter threat to Alshon Jeffery heading into Sundays game at Indianapolis.Meredith had four catches against Detroit for 28 yards. A former quarterback at Illinois State, he thinks that experience can give him an advantage. Its started to kind of fade away, Meredith said of his background throwing passes instead of catching them. But those little things, you need to get on the same page with the quarterback, know where they want to throw the ball. Im excited to get out there and make some plays.Hoyer continued taking snaps with the first team with Jay Cutler sidelined due to a thumb sprain. Cutler did not practice again Wednesday. On Monday, Fox called every position performance-based including quarterback. This would suggest Hoyer can keep the position if he continues to produce like he did Sunday with 302 passing yards and a passer rating of 120.1.At this point Im just trying to keep doing what Im doing, keep doing what Im asked of, Hoyer said. And when I get a chance to play, play the best I can.Game notes Inside linebacker Danny Trevathan, who had thumb surgery two weeks ago, practiced Wednesday on a limited basis with a cast on his hand. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said its his experience that playing with cast doesnt work well, but its possible Trevathan could manage it. Jimmie Ward Super Bowl Jersey . I have a sense of déjà vu this season. Again and again, I keep getting out. Bowled, early on in my innings, when the ball is pitched up. I swear the same delivery last year was dispatched over the boundary rope. This summer its shattering the bails.Whats gone wrong?I cant blame my bat, its great piece of willow. Ive definitely been unlucky, though, at least once, as I was run out backing up when the bowler feathered a straight drive off his fingertips into the stumps. But that was once. Some batsmen like to blame the umpire for a run of barren form, and I wish I could. Except for the game where I was triggered lbw sweeping an offspinner - the bowler came up to me after the match and said, I was a bit surprised by that decision - the officials have been flawless. And the fact is, if Id been in form in the first place, Id have connected with that leg-side full toss.Early in the season I tried blaming the pudding wickets, the soft tracks prepared by that Great British groundsman, the wet weather. Soon after I trudged back to the pavilion muttering about the ball not coming on, the next batsman hit a hundred. There is occasional solace when dismissed by a genuine jaffa, and there was certainly that one ball that pitched outside leg and nipped the off bail. That wouldve got Joe Root out, chirped the umpire. And Joe Root would have got a double-hundred in the next match, in which I was yorked by a slow outswinger, on a perfect deck.So whats the solution? Is it a mental problem? Two of my team-mates sought the advice of a bona fide sports psychologist before the season had even started, and both claim the powers conveyed in their counselling sessions have made them better players. The problem is that I studied psychology at university. I know the tricks of the trade. It would be like a magician going to watch a magic show.If my form were a stalling car, Id take it to a mechanic. If my knee was smarting, Id see a physiotherapist. Therefore the cricket equivalent is the coach.Enter Tom Flowers, not only the current leading run scorer of the Leicestershire Premier Division but also the national assistant coach to the England Learning Disability squad. I first met Tom when he was a toddler watching his dad and I play nearly 25 years ago, and I again bumped into him this winter leading my old clubs pre-season training. I gave him a call, reminded him that I once bowled at him as a kid, and then booked a net. Although I grew up with intensive one-to-one coaching, from the woodwork teacher at my comprehensive school telling us to hold the bat like an axe, and from the willing players of Leicestershire CCC when they came out on club visits, I hadnt had specialist intervention for years. From the moment I put on the pads and started hitting back Toms throwdowns, I was under scrutiny. Instead of a doctor examining my chest with a tap of the stethoscope, Tom was diagnosing my batting illness with each ball that passed my outside edge or drilled into my pads.Unlike the pro player, who has his technique magnified by HD cameras and scything pundits, the average club hacker has guesswork and team-mate gossip. I knew Tom had made the right prognosis when, without seeing me get out this season, he mimicked how I usually end up being skittled - falling over with my head lopped to one side.Head, hands, feet, he told me, and then showed me. Like a nervous tic, I had developed an odd trigger movement. A short step with my front foot before the ball had even been bowled, as Tom demonstrated by feigning to throw and watching me shuffle forward when the ball was still 22 yards away.In a single season I had worked this faux dance step into my stance. From where? Through injury and age, our bodies change. We develop habits that we dont notice. Jonathan Trott began playing in front of his pad, part of a problem he developed in moving too early to play the ball. There is a big difference with having it in your head to get forward, as Geoff Boycott noted when Trott was in the West Indies in 2015, and moving forward before the bowler actually lets go of the ball.I might not be fending off bouncers in Port Elizabeth or Perth, but my twitchy feet mean Im unbalanced when actually hitting - if lucky - the cherry. After a few drills to retrain my impetuous step, I asked Tom how hard it was to blend this technique tweak into my natural game.Look at Jonny Bairstow, Tom instantly replied. What a transformation.Shortly after Bairstow made his Test debut in 2012, he was dropped. Worse than that, there was the sense hed been found out by quick bowling. His technique simply wasnt sound enough for international cricket. So he went away, changed his stance, hands, and backlift. He broke down everything from chest position to how low he crouched. And wow, has it worked. Bairstow has gone from a failing prospect to a regular star. On his technique rehaul, Bairstow says, If I dont keep improving and evolving my game, its not going to work.Inspiration, surely, for this amateur clubber to stop twitching that front foot and to get his head in line. I shall find out if the tweak turns into runs soon. Custom Calgary Flames Jerseys . -- Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Farmar will be out for roughly four weeks after tearing his left hamstring. Custom Packers Jersey China . LOUIS -- St. CHASKA, Minn. -- Michael Jordan was on the course watching the golfer named after him, Jordan Spieth, and his partner,?Patrick Reed, and there was no doubting the identity of the biggest American star in the field. The Ryder Cup fans were falling over themselves as they reached across the ropes to touch Jordan, get his attention and ask him if he thought the United States would finally win.Jordan was dressed in a Team USA sweat suit. He had a smoldering cigar in his hand and an all-business look on his face as he stood beside a police officer and silently watched the Americans tee off. He didnt offer much more than a few nods, a few hellos and a concession to someone he recognized and might owe a few dollars from a bygone golf game. (True story.) But really, what was there for the greatest closer of all time to say?Jordan went six-for-six in the NBA Finals and six-for-six in the chase to be named NBA Finals MVP, and you know deep down that the worlds most recognizable golf fan wonders why the U.S. never seems to have the mental toughness to put away the Europeans. You know deep down that Michael Jordan wishes he could do more than stare down Ian Poulter (and wag his finger at him) the way he did at Medinah in 2012 and wishes he had the tee-to-green talent to do to Rory McIlroy what he used to do to the Knicks. However, the fact that Jordan wont be suiting up for his fellow North Carolina Tar Heel, Davis Love III, when this Ryder Cup is decided Sunday shouldnt make any difference in the outcome. Love is on record as saying he is coaching, or captaining, the best golf team, maybe, ever assembled. If that is a debatable claim, this one isnt: Love has the better team at Hazeltine. He has a better team that has a 9? to 6? lead going into the final session. He has a better team playing a home game in front of a Minnesota crowd that has sounded every bit as hostile as a Red Sox-Yankees crowd at Fenway Park.Oh, and Love also has in Reed a lion who is roaring just as loudly as McIlroy on the other side. The Americans have no excuses to not win the Ryder Cup for the first time since 2008 and for only the third time in their past 11 attempts. They have no good reason to choke the way they did for Love at Medinah, where they blew a 10-6 lead with some synchronized gagging down the stretch. They have a dozen singles matches to play against an inferior European team that includes a spooked Danny Willett and five other rookies, a completely fried Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer (a combined 0-5 at Hazeltine), and the old terminator, Poulter, in the benign role of vice captain.Even if McIlroy beats Reed in perhaps the greatest opening act in Ryder Cup history, the Americans should win six of those duels just by showing up.?Dustin Johnson should take Chris Wood, Brooks Koepka should take Willett, Matt Kuchar should take Kaymer, Ryan Moore should take Westwood, Brandt Snedeker should take Andy Sullivan, and Zach Johnson should take Matthew Fitzpatrick. The Americans can lose one of those matches and the other five (four of them featuring heavyweights Spieth, Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler?and Jimmy Walker) and still end up with enough points to prevail. They have all done what Ive asked them to do incredibly well, Love said of his players. They are all confident. They all want to play.Although Love gambled corrrectly Saturday afternoon that Mickelson would overcome his erratic driving and wisely listened to Tiger Woods advice to play Reed and Spieth for a fourth straight session (what a disaster that benching wouldve been!), he made one mistake that did not come back to hurt him.ddddddddddddJust as he benched his hot team, Mickelson and Keegan Bradley, before the meltdown at Medinah, Love sat Snedeker on Saturday afternoon after the Snedeker-Koepka tandem went 2-0 and was the only American team to win Friday afternoon. The U.S. captain handed in his afternoon pairings before Snedeker and Koepkas morning victory over Henrik Stenson and Fitzpatrick was complete, but the Americans never trailed in their match, and Snedeker was on fire, celebrating his made putts with fury like McIlroys and Reeds. The Europeans never seem to rest their hot hands. Five of their players will go the full five matches; only two Americans will do the same. The Europeans never seem to let up.But the two leading candidates to sit for Snedeker, Moore and J.B. Holmes, won their match with Westwood and Willett. Mickelson and Kuchar did some goofy, middle-aged, happy dance at Kaymers and Sergio Garcias expense, and Loves guys won three of four points in the afternoon.None came up bigger than the young rebel who loves to dress himself in Tiger Woods red. Teamed with the higher profile Texan, Spieth, Reed survived their calamitous finish in a morning draw with Garcia and Rafa Cabrera Bello to put on a fireworks show in the afternoon by pummeling Justin Rose and Stenson with a flurry of birdies and a hole-out eagle. As amazing as that was, Reeds show did not make a buyer of every European visitor in the stands. On the ninth hole, with a man dressed as Captain America leading the cheers, one Garcia supporter shouted at the home fans, Remember Medinah. Remember Medinah. If Love needed more reminder of what went down in 2012, he got it Saturday night. Were closer than we were at Medinah, said Rose, one of the heroes of that day. The Englishman would predict, Its our turn tomorrow. Were going to come out strong.Recent history says the Americans fear that this ballgame isnt over. That is, recent history and the presence of McIlroy, who has all of Poulters rage and guts and 20 times the talent. By playing a pro wrestling heel in Gorgeous George form, McIlroy has turned his battle with the Hazeltine crowd into a steel cage match. On Sunday, only one combatant will come out alive.Loves players should be the last men standing. The U.S. has a 3-point lead, home-field advantage, superior talent and a closer in Reed who has a Jordan-esque flair for the moment. For Love, even without former schoolmate Michael Jordan to take the ball, this should be tantamount to a slam dunk on Dean Smiths court. The best golf team (maybe) ever assembled has no business losing this Ryder Cup to a beaten-down European group that looks in desperate need of a Caribbean cruise. On Sunday, Love will tell his players to keep doing what theyre doing and have a whole lot of fun. But if the American captain were on truth serum for his final pregame meeting with his players, his most appropriate advice would be reduced to two words:Dont choke. ' ' '

West Indies 224 and 171 for 4 (Brathwaite 67, Blackwood 41*, Yasir 2-60) need a further 285 runs to beat Pakistan 452 and 227 for 2 dec (Azhar 79, Shafiq 58*)Scorecard and ball-by-ball details Declaring at lunch to give themselves five sessions to bowl West Indies out, Pakistan took emphatic strides towards an unassailable 2-0 lead, picking up four wickets even as their bowlers derived little help from a still placid Abu Dhabi pitch. Chasing 456, West Indies were 171 for 4 at stumps, with only one of the four wickets coming off a wicket-taking ball. Their hopes werent entirely extinguished, though, with Roston Chase and Jermaine Blackwood seeing them through to stumps with an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 47 in 17.2 overs. This was the pair that was together at the start of the fifth day when West Indies saved the Jamaica Test against India in August. The amount of time Pakistan gave themselves to take ten wickets indicated that they expected plenty of hard toil in excellent batting conditions. There was no swing available to the new-ball pair of Rahat Ali and Sohail Khan, and it took Misbah-ul-Haq only six overs to turn to spin from both ends. There was not much help on offer for the spinners either, but Yasir Shah did not have to wait too long for his first wicket. Having faced only three balls from the legspinner, Leon Johnson tried to sweep him, and ended up dragging the ball onto his stumps, off the flap of his pad. The ball pitched outside leg stump, so Johnson may have felt the shot was on, but he was probably playing the shot Yasir wanted him to play, given all the fielders waiting around the bat for a top-edge or a bat-pad.The same was the case when Darren Bravo chased away from his body to try and cut Rahat, back for a second spell, in the 19th over, while making no attempt to keep the ball down. He middled the ball, and it may well have rocketed to the boundary had he placed it a few feet either side of the fielder at point, but the choice of shot played right into Pakistans hands.Usually so selective with his attacking strokes, Kraigg Brathwaite also came out looking to go after the bowling. Early on, he drove Sohail on the up through cover point, and later he stepped out to Zulfiqar Babar and launched him for a six over long-on and slogged him, against the turn, for a four through midwicket. The wicket of Bravo, however, forced him into a change of approach: having made 41 offf 54 balls till that point, he made 26 off his next 78 balls, before falling in the 14th over after tea.dddddddddddd Mohammad Nawaz, unused until the 41st over of the innings, struck in his third over, getting the ball to skid on to beat Brathwaites attempt to work him into the leg side off the back foot.By then, Marlon Samuels had also departed to an aggressive shot, stepping out to Yasir, looking to drive him against the turn, and ending up scooping back a return catch. Samuels had scored 23 off 61, looking secure enough while defending and making a conscious effort to get behind the line while defending off the back foot. But ever so often he got himself in trouble by taking a risk - slashing and missing against Sohail, hitting over the top against Zulfiqar.Blackwoods approach at the crease was much like that of Samuels, and he lived on the edge to reach 41 by stumps. He was lucky to survive when he went for a big hit against Yasir in the last over of the day and ended up skewing the ball in the air but into a vacant part of the covers. Chase, at the other end, was calmer and more secure, only troubled when Yasir got the odd ball to rip past his defensive bat. With Pakistan already 342 ahead at the start of the day, West Indies had set defensive fields against Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq, hoping to limit the damage the batsmen could inflict upon them. In their desire to plug the boundaries, West Indies allowed a steady stream of easy singles; Shafiq and Azhar added 50 in the first 69 balls of the day, despite hitting only three fours in that time. Then Azhar, chasing away from his body, nicked to wide slip, falling for 79 and giving Miguel Cummins his first wicket of the match.By then, Pakistans lead was nearly 400. The declaration was to come very soon, but Pakistan gave few clues, with runs coming at a reasonable clip without the batsmen really forcing the pace. Shafiq hit a couple of gorgeous shots as he approached his fifty, whipping Jason Holder between midwicket and mid-on, and then getting to the landmark with a deft late-cut off Roston Chase. At the other end, Younis Khan punched Holder past his left hand and all the way to the straight boundary. By the time Pakistan declared, the two had put on 63 at 3.81 runs per over while barely breaking a sweat. ' ' '

PHOENIX - Arizonas Ian Kennedy dropped his appeal and began serving his 10-game suspension Monday. The team made the announcement just before the start of Monday nights game against Miami, which the Diamondbacks lost 3-2. Kennedy got the most severe of the six suspensions stemming from the brawl between the Diamondbacks and Dodgers in Los Angeles last Tuesday. He was suspended after hitting Yasiem Puig and Zack Greinke with high inside pitches, the latter one triggering the bench-clearing melee. SAO PAULO, Brazil -- Brazilian striker Neymar says he is officially a Barcelona player. Neymar said he signed a five-year contract agreement with the Spanish powerhouse on Monday, two days after announcing that he decided to pick the Catalan club instead of Real Madrid. "Im sad to be leaving Santos, but its a great honour to be signing with a club like Barcelona and to be able to play with some of the best players in the world," Neymar said. The 21-year-old Brazilian will be joining a star-filled roster that already includes four-time FIFA Player of the Year Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta. Neither Neymar nor Barcelona released financial details of the transfer, but Brazilian media said the Spanish club will pay about (euro)30 million for the youngster. Santos had fielded offers from Barcelona and Real Madrid and said it was up to Neymar to decide where he wanted to play. Neymar posted a message on Twitter and Instagram announcing his departure from the Brazilian club where he has thrived since he began playing professionally as a teenager in 2009. "Here it ends this wonderful passage with a special club," Neymar said. "Thank you for everything. Ill keep these moments with me my entire life." Neymar led Santos to its greatest run since Pele stopped playing for the club in the 1970s. He helped Santos win the 2010 Brazilian Cup, the 2011 Copa Libertadores and three straight Sao Paulo state championships. He remains the clubs leading scorer in the post-Pele era with 138 goals in 230 matches. Neymars father, Neymar Silva Santos, said that on Monday they signed a contract establishing the terms of the transfer, and a final document will be signed in Spain by Santos, his son and Barcelona. Neymar will join up with Brazils Confederations Cup squad on Tuesday and is expected to travel to Spain for his official introduction to Barcelona fans on June 2 after the national teams friendly against England at the Maracana. He wanted to play one last match with Santos at the Vila Belmiro Stadium, but the Brazilian football federation did release him from the national teams preparation for the Confederations Cup. SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The NCAA has ordered the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to vacate all the wins from their 2012 and 2013 football seasons in an academic misconduct case, it was announced Tuesday.Notre Dame announced it will appeal the decision.?Notre Dame was the national runner-up during the 2012 season, losing to Alabama in the BCS title game and finishing with a 12-1 mark. The Irish went 9-4 in 2013.According to the decision, the agreed-upon violations centered on academic misconduct by a former student athletic trainer and two football student-athletes during a three-year period. The student trainer also provided six other football players with impermissible academic benefits across 18 courses in two years. The NCAA committee on infractions prescribed a public reprimand and censure of Notre Dame, one year of probation, a two-year show-cause order for the former trainer, a two-year disassociation of the former student trainer, a vacating of all records in which ineligible student-athletes participated while ineligible during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, and a $5,000 fine.Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly, speaking at a regularly scheduled news conference, said the entire school has been cooperative throughout the investigation, and he thanked it for its support. Its never happened before in the history of the NCAA. The penalty has never been issued in this fashion before, Kelly said. I think that qualifies for being, first of all, it was discretionary. This is a discretionary action by the committee. Thats No. 1. No. 2, student-on-student cheating, nobody implicated. The NCAA agreed across the board with that finding, and it was clearly excessive, so were gonna appeal this, and one of the options or clear reasons for appeal is that the penalty is excessive in its discretion and we believe we have obvious grounds there.Kelly said he bears no culpability for the academic misconduct that occurred under his watch. He said he plans on being back in 2017 for an eighth season, saying criticism from this 4-7 season stems from the Fighting Irishs lack of success and is independent of this NCAA situation. If doing the right thing means youve got to put an asterisk next to these games, Kelly said of games he won that are subject to being vacated, thats fine by me.We still beat Oklahoma. We still beat Wake Forest. We still beat all those teams, so you can put an asterisk next to it. If that makes you feel better, then thats fine with me.Lions receiver?T.J. Jones, a key member of the 2012 and 2013 Notre Dame teams, agreed with his former coachs sentiment. We played the games. We did the practices so to me, theyre not vacated. They can take them away, but those years, those memories, the blood, sweat and tears we shared on the field, you cant take that away from us, Jones said.Technically you can take away the wins but at the end of the day, when we all get together as friends, were going to still talk about those games and those plays and those memories as if the wins were never vacated in the first place. In a statement, Kelly and the Rev. John Jenkins, president of Notre Dame, both said the university would appeal the decision to vacate the wins because the penalty they have imposed is not justified. We are disappointed in the actions of students who engaged in dishonesty, but we are gratified that the NCAA investigation confirmed the conclusions of our own internal investigation: Notre Dame acted honorably throughout, Jenkins said in the statement. As soon as professioonal staff suspected academic dishonesty on the part of a student, the matter was reported promptly, investigated aggressively and thoroughly, and adjudicated in accord with our Academic Code of Honor procedures and norms.dddddddddddd ...We disagree with the decision of the hearing panel to impose, at its own discretion, a vacation of records penalty. In past academic misconduct cases, the Committee on Infractions has imposed this penalty only when it has found serious institutional misconduct, such as actions with the direct involvement or knowledge of a coach or academic personnel, a failure to monitor or a lack of institutional control. The NCAA enforcement staff and the hearing panel agreed with Notre Dame that no such institutional misconduct occurred in this case. Indeed, the only reason the NCAA reviewed the matter was because the misconduct involved a former fellow student who happened to participate in the Universitys student trainer program -- an activity which involved no responsibility for the academic work of student-athletes.Jenkins said in the statement that everyone involved -- including the football program and the universitys compliance office -- did everything that we could have asked of them. Two players were still enrolled when the violations were discovered and the school sought reinstatement of them through the student-athlete reinstatement process, according to the public infractions decision. The other four players were no longer enrolled when the violations were discovered and therefore were not subject to the schools academic integrity policies. The student trainers conduct was ruled unethical by Notre Dame and the NCAA. The parties agreed the violations are Level II.Additionally, another football player committed academic misconduct during two years without the involvement of a school staff member. The parties agreed these violations were Level II as well.Notre Dame had launched an internal investigation in 2014 once it became aware of potential academic misconduct by one former player and one current player. The school says it reviewed 95,000 documents. It immediately suspended the involved players from all athletic activities and, at the conclusion of the honor-code process, dismissed four players and imposed retroactive grade changes in the courses affected. We believe that imposition of the vacation of records penalty without serious underlying institutional misconduct will not primarily punish those responsible for the misconduct, but rather will punish coaches, student-athletes and indeed the entire institution who did nothing wrong and, with regard to this case, did everything right, Jenkins said in the release. We are also concerned that establishing this precedent will infringe on universities autonomy in deterring academic dishonesty, for it will discourage the retroactive lowering of grades even when an honor code committee deems this appropriate. As we said at the outset of this investigation, Notre Dame would willingly accept a vacation of records penalty if it were appropriate. It is not in this case. Indeed, should this precedent stand, it could create a perverse incentive that will discourage institutions from investigating so aggressively and imposing the penalties for academic dishonesty that their honesty committees might judge appropriate.ESPNs Michael Rothstein contributed to this report. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Welcome back to the big stage, Jerick McKinnon and Fozzy Whittaker.Oh, and Matt Asiata and Cameron Artis-Payne, get ready to carry the football, too.The Vikings and Panthers will be counting on their backup running backs to have a next man up mentality when they meet Sunday in Charlotte, a city that was placed under a state of emergency due to the violent protests stemming from a police shooting last week. Both teams lost their featured backs last week to injury -- Minnesotas Adrian Peterson underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus, while Jonathan Stewart is dealing with a pulled hamstring. Both players are out indefinitely. While Peterson was the leagues MVP in 2012, a case can be made that Stewart might be just as valuable to the Panthers at this point. Carolina comes in with the leagues top-ranked rushing offense, while the Vikings are last.Whittaker has started three games since coming into the league as an undrafted rookie in 2012, but ran for 100 yards on 16 carries last week in a 47-26 win over the San Francisco 49ers after Stewart went down in the first quarter. Whittaker has primarily been used as a third-down back and could wind up splitting carries with Artis-Payne, a bigger, stronger runner who has more of a straight-ahead style.A lot of it is you prepare for the scheme and then youre aware of the back thats in there, whichever back it ends up being, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said.McKinnon hopes to give the Vikings (2-0) a boost in the running game. The 5-foot-9, 205-pound back has started six games during his three seasons in the league, all of those in 2014 when he ran for 538 yards and averaged 4.8 yards per carry. Asiata is a power back who could see goal-line and short-yardage carries.Things to watch on Sunday:BUMMED BROTHER: Panthers center Ryan Kalil said he is bummed that he wont be facing his brother Matt, the starting left tackle for the Vikings who was placed on injured reserve with a hip injury this week. They have faced each other twice in their careers. We definitely get very competitive during these weeks and we have a 1-1 tally going on, Ryan Kalil said. Im really, really disappointed for my brother and I knew hes really upset.T.J. Clemmings, who started all 16 games at right tackle last season for the Vikings, will be back in a starting role.WAYNES WORLD: The knee injury that kept Vikings cornerback Xavier Rhodes out of the first two games thrust Trae Waynes, the teams first-round draft pick last year, into an elevated role.Hes still on his NFL learning curve, as evidenced by the pass interference and defensive holding penalties he picked up on the same drive in the third quarter against Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers targeted him often. But Waynes darted in front of a fourth-quarter pass by Rodgers for a game-sealing interception in the victory, a clear sign of progress for the Michigan State product.Id much rather have him be aggressive and get a couple of those once in a while than play real soft and scared, Zimmer said of the flags thrown on Waynes.Rhodes has returned to practice this week, which could affect Waynes playing time.RECEIVERS ON A MISSION: Panthers wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin has been huge since his return from a torn ACL with 13 receptions for 199 yards and three touchdowns in his first two games back.Meanwhile, Stefon Diggs has been tearing it up for Minnesota with 180 yards receiving and a TD in last weeks 17-14 win over the Packers.CLEANING IT UP: The Panthers won last week despite turning over the ball four times. Its something Cam Newton said the team needs to clean up against the Vikings. We just cant keep allowing ourselves to go on those lulls and having those brain farts, the quarterback saidCAPTAIN RETURNS: Vikings cornerback Captain Munnerlyn spent the first five seasons of his career with the Panthers and still keeps a home in Charlotte in the offseason. So it will be a homecoming when he returns as a vital member of one of the leagues top defenses. Its definitely going back home, Munnerlyn said. My emotions are very high. Jack Clifford impressed in front of the watching Eddie Jones as Tim Swiels boot guided Harlequins past Bath at the Stoop.?Tim Visser dotted down just moments into the game at The Stoop but, despite early domination, Quins struggled to make the pressure count. It was a lack of clinical edge that they were left to rue at the break, as they only led by one point as Kane Palma-Newports score clawed the visitors back, although it was not enough to prevent a second defeat of the campaign. And while Karl Dickson and Nathan Catt exchanged tries, it was left to South African Swiel to seal the deal with just a couple of minutes remaining.Scotland international Visser opened the scoring after just three minutes, Quins dominating a scrum and moving the ball quickly for the wing to score in the corner. But with the scoreboard kept tight, Bath fancied their way back in when Semesa Rokoduguni collected a kick deep inside his half, nearly running the length of the field to score, and Tom Homer kicked the subsequent penalty.Harlequins dominated possession thereafter and were rewarded in the 29th minute when Bath conceded a penalty in front of the posts, which Swiel easily converted. The South African added to his tally five minutes later after the visitors were caught offside, but Palma-Newport ensured his finished the half with a flourish, the prop bulldozing his way over and the converted score making it a one-point game in south London.Bath were clearly galvanised by their llate try in the first half and took an unexpected lead in the 44th minute when James Chisholm was caught offside, allowing Homer to kick his side into a 13-11 advantage.ddddddddddddBut just as they began to dominate possession, Bath were caught out by a quick break on the right flank that allowed Dickson to score Quins second try, with Swiel just tucking in the conversion.Catt put Bath 20-18 ahead when he scored a try with 66 minutes gone after video replays confirmed the ball had grounded and Homers conversion just deflected inside the post.It was a lead that should have been extended when Ben Tapuai galloped through Harlequins defence and looked set to score but the impressive Swiel tackled to keep the hosts in the game. After conceding cheap penalties in the first half, the prospect of an unlikely victory steeled Baths defence, which withheld wave after wave of pressure from Quins backs as both sides pushed hard in a breathless encounter. And just when it seemed the points were lost, it was Swiel who came to the rescue for Harlequins when they won a penalty from distance, the fly-half converting with a straight kick that sailed over the posts to put them narrowly ahead on 21-20.Going to the very last play, Quins almost threw away their advantage by missing touch, only for a turnover to see the gleeful hosts launch the ball away. The NRL career of wayward back-rower Paul Carter is in tatters after his sacking by South Sydney. The 24-year-old had his contract torn up on Tuesday by the Rabbitohs board after breaching the clubs code of conduct and clauses in his contract.Carter was axed after he failed to turn up to training following a bender and last week checked himself into a Thai rehabilitation facility. The board has made a decision today to terminate Pauls contract immediately as a result of his recent conduct, Rabbitohs chairman Shane Richardson said.We have given Paul all of the support, and every opportunity, to get his career and life back on track but, unfortunately, he has been unable to meet the standards we had agreed when Paul joined the club. This is a bigger issue than football for Paul. Needless to say, we will continue to provide welfare, support and assistance to Paul in his continuing rehabilitation.Carter, the son of Penrith great Steve, has a troubled history with alcohol and, in 2014, was sacked by Gold Coast for repeat drink-driving offences.Following his exit from the Titans, he begged for a second chance and was thrown a lifeline by the Rabbitohs. He returned at the back end of last season and, last month, was granted a contract extension until the end of 2018.However, he again went off the rails and was stood down alongside Kirisome Auvaa for failing to fulfil their training duties. PITTSBURGH -- Maybe its the lack of pressure on a team that is out of contention as mid-September approaches. Maybe its one or two players making a difference here and there.Whatever it is, the Cincinnati Reds have been a thorn in the Pittsburgh Pirates sides in a weekend series which concludes Sunday at PNC Park. The Reds lost Thursday in the series opener but have come back to win two in a row against a team desperate for wins.I feel like when you start to put too much context into a game, you fall prey to the ebbs and flows of the season, said Cincinnatis Joey Votto, whose homer Saturday provided the winning margin in an 8-7 game.I feel like the best teams and the best players dont pay attention to those kind of things and are just trying to execute. Thats why I think the rah-rah ... doesnt work in this game. Youve got to go out and play well. The Pirates would do well to use that or any other formula that would produce more wins. Pittsburgh (69-71) has lost 10 of its past 12 games and is 5 1/2 games behind of the National League wild-card cutoff, with 22 games remaining. The series against the Reds (59-82) marks the first four games of 15 in a row against teams that are playing out the season, which would seem like an opportune situation.Manager Clint Hurdle approached being terse -- something not normally in his character -- after Saturdays loss when asked about any message he was sending to the Pittsburgh players. The one thing I do is when I talk to guys, I dont tell youu I talk to them, Hurdle said.ddddddddddddVotto isnt sure any lectures or messages are needed if players are accountable. In my experience, all players feel they have the responsibility to do the best they can every day, regardless of where your team or the other team is in the standings, he said.Manager Bryan Price, Votto said, sets the tone for the Reds.Bryan is always managing to win, Votto said. Hes never worrying about fairness. Hes trying to win every game.Price is one win shy of 200 career wins.Sunday, Price will sent left-hander Brandon Finnegan (8-10, 4.17 ERA) to the mound.Over Finnegans past four starts, opposing hitters are just 12-for-86 (.140), but he has been the victim of some less than ideal circumstances this season. Five times, the Reds have blown saves in games he has pitched. Twice, he has taken a no-hitter into the seventh inning but wasnt able to complete it.The Pirates are in a stretch where they are managing their rotation in a way to keep some of their young arms fresher in the hope they make the playoffs, but that wont apply to right-hander Ryan Vogelsong, who his scheduled to start Sunday.Vogelsong (3-4, 4.07) will be making his eighth appearance since he returned from the DL after taking a pitch to the face and having surgery in May, so his season pitch count isnt a concern. He is 2-2 with a 4.26 ERA since he returned. ' ' '

LOS ANGELES -- In less than 16 years, the UFC has grown from a money-losing company in a widely reviled sport into a global entertainment property worth $4 billion. While the UFC and its new owners figure out the companys next steps, Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta are tapping out of mixed martial arts with a remarkable return on a $2 million investment. The UFC has been sold for approximately $4 billion to a group led by Hollywood entertainment conglomerate WME-IMG, both companies confirmed Monday. The sale will spectacularly benefit the Fertitta brothers and UFC President Dana White, who first persuaded his wealthy high school buddies to buy the cage fighting promotion in 2001. White also owned 9 percent of the company, and he isnt going anywhere despite his own windfall: Hell remain the boss and public face of the UFC while keeping an ownership stake. No other sport compares to UFC, White said. Our goal has always been to put on the biggest and the best fights for our fans, and to make this the biggest sport in the world. Im looking forward to working with WME-IMG to continue to take this sport to the next level.Since their purchase of IMG three years ago, WME co-CEOs Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell have been pursuing properties throughout sports and entertainment ahead of a possible initial public offering. The UFC is their biggest buy yet -- and the deal appears to be the largest single financial transaction in the history of sports. Were now committed to pursuing new opportunities for UFC and its talented athletes to ensure the sports continued growth and success on a global scale, Emanuel said.In their first public comments about the deal, White and the new owners have suggested little will change at first for the promotion. The UFC has a full slate of fights scheduled this year, all building toward its long-awaited debut at Madison Square Garden in November after New York legalized MMA earlier this year. But the UFCs new financial backing and WME-IMGs marketing dexterity seem certain to lead to even more growth and global prominence for MMAs dominant promotion, which has bought out or eliminated many of its competitors in the sport.UFC has experienced tremendous growth over the last decade and we are looking forward to helping the organization and its athletes identify new opportunities to develop and further establish their global footprint, Emanuel said.Few companies do that better than WME, but the UFC has also been pretty good at building stars in its own violent milieu. After helping Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz to straddle the line between sports and entertainment, the promotion now boasts a stable of elite athletes with mainstream fame, including Conor McGregorr, Brock Lesnar and Ronda Rousey, who is represented by WME.ddddddddddddIts too soon to tell whether the deal will lead to more money for the UFCs non-unionized athletes. The promotion regularly receives criticism from mid-level fighters for its pay scale, but its ability to control talent costs is a major factor in its profitability. For instance, Lesnar made a disclosed $2.5 million along with probable millions in undisclosed bonuses for his victory over Mark Hunt at UFC 200 last Saturday. T.J. Dillashaw, the promotions former bantamweight champion, made $50,000 for his fight, and that includes a $25,000 bonus only paid because he won.McGregor, who makes multiple millions for each of his fights, congratulated the Fertittas on his Twitter account. Other UFC fighters took to social media on Monday to speculate hopefully about the impact of the deal.Perfect time to change the revenue split to 46/54 percent to be equal to the other major sports, tweeted featherweight Jeremy Stephens, with the hashtag weallneedtoeat .Cristiane Cyborg Justino also tweeted her congratulations. The vaunted Brazilian fighter signed with the UFC in March despite acknowledging she struggles to make the 135-pound limit on the UFCs largest womens weight class.Big things coming! Justino said. Hopefully a few new (womens MMA) weight classes too! Im ready. The UFCs price tag has drawn gasps since it was first rumored earlier this year, but the consortium is basically buying an entire sport, given the UFCs omnipotence atop MMA. Bellator and other ostensible competitors draw a fraction of the UFCs revenue and attention. With more than 500 athletes under contract, the UFC stages roughly 40 events per year and is broadcast in more than 150 countries, reaching 1.1 billion television households. The UFC is frequently described as the worlds largest pay-per-view event provider, and it also has a prolific digital streaming service, UFC Fight Pass, that it describes as Netflix for fight fans and is a key component of potential growth.Whats more, the UFCs broadcast deal with Fox also ends in 2018, and the next contract is expected to be lucrative.Talent agency WME purchased IMG, the sports and event management group, in 2013 with goals of growing into an omnivorous entertainment company. The organization already made moves into niche sports properties last year by buying Professional Bull Riders and forming an e-sports gaming league with Turner Broadcasting. The Fertitta brothers will retain a passive minority interest in the UFC, and the Abu Dhabi government still owns 10 percent of the company. SPRINGFIELD, N.J. -- Two holes into the final major of the year, Rory McIlroy was starting to lose patience. He missed a 10-foot birdie putt on his opening hole at No. 10 on Thursday. He hit another beautiful approach into the 11th hole at Baltusrol, 10 feet below the hole, and missed that. Even after Phil Mickelson and Jason Day had left the green, McIlroy stayed behind, looking at the cup from a different direction. It was a precursor for more misery with his putting at the PGA Championship. When his opening round ended, McIlroy had 35 putts and no birdies. His 4-over 74 was the first time he failed to break par in the opening round of the PGA Championship. You give yourself chances the first couple of holes, you dont convert, he said. You want to get off to a good start. I feel like if I had holed one of those first two, it might have been a different story of the day. You get a little momentum and you get it going.Instead, it kept sliding in the wrong direction. His 8-foot par putt on the 13th never had a chance. His 5-foot birdie putt on the 17th never got to the hole.He believes he is driving the ball as well as ever, which goes a long way at Baltusrol. His irons felt good, except for a few loose ones.Just when I get on the green, its a different story, he said.McIlroy was nine shots behind after one round, and that doesnt bode well. In his four victories in the majors, he was never more than one shot behind. The only major he won with any round over par was a 75 in the wind at Kiawah Island four years ago in the PGA Championship.I havent won this tournament from this position before, so Ill need a low one tomorrow, McIlroy said. I think first and foremost, I have to play a good round to get into the weekend tomorrow. Thats the first objective, and then go from there. This is the second major this year that McIlroy has put himself well behind after the opening round. He never recovered at Oakmont, missing the cut in the U.S. Open.Making it even more pressing is that he is on the verge of going a second straight year without a major. Putting has been a problem all year, dating to February when he decided to switch to a cross-handed grip as he prepared for the Masters. This time, he felt he simply was tricked by poa annua greens that look faster than they really are.Im struggling with the pace, he said. I think you saw out there, there was a couple of putts from quite a short distance that I left short. Thats the thing that sort of surprised me all week. They look much quicker than they are. They look much quicker than they putt. ... So I just need to be a little bit more aggressive, a little bit more free flowing with my stroke. Because when I did hit a couple by, I was able to hole the ones coming back.Thursday was no time to practice. The heat was oppressive and drained everyone of energy. McIlroy decided to head back to his house and rest. He returned Thursday evening with coach Michael Bannon and putted for more than an hour.Even as he left Baltusrol, he was confronted with a score on his card that he didnt see coming. Given the chances he had, he figured something around par would have been the worst he could post. Instead, only three tour players had a worse score among the morning wave. And that card didnt have any birdies on it.I cant remember the last time I went without a birdie, he said. `Ill stay as patient as I can and as hard as I can and hopefully turn it around. Kimi Raikkonen said a combination of traffic and issues with tyre warm-up forced him to settle for sixth on the grid for the Malaysian Grand Prix.Raikkonen has been the fastest Ferrari for much of the weekend in Sepang and found himself fourth early on in Q3, two places up on Vettel, albeit behind both Red Bulls. Neither Ferrari driver maximised their second attempts but Vettel managed to do enough to climb above Raikkonen as the pair had to settle for locking out the third row.Explaining how qualifying unfolded, Raikkonen said: It was just a bit tricky on the first lap in Q1, the first lap in Q2 was pretty OK, but it was a bit difficult to get the tyres to work there. Apart from that I had quite a smooth running. It was just on the last lap [of Q3] I had traffic on the out lap and then struggled with the tyres in the first corners. I tried to get time back, but just kept losing more time, so it was not the greatest end, but thats how it goes sometimes. When asked if he could have out-qualified either Red Bull without those issues in Q3, he said: I dont know. Its not possible to say and the end result is what it is. We can always say afterwards, this and that, but these are the facts and I think we struggled a bit to make the tyres work. Its a bit cooler than it was in the morning or yesterday and it will be a different story tomorrow. Its not the easiest weekend to get the tyres to where we want them to be, even when its hot youd think it should be quite easy but it has been quite tricky. The Finn thinks the timing of qualifying, which takes place later than FP2 on Friday afternoon or the race on Sunday, had something to do with Ferraris struggle to beat Red Bull.Obviously today we ran later than yesterday and also later than the race time, so its one of those things with the new surface to say which way its going to go and which tyre will be the best. I think theres little difference between the teams but well make some plans today and tomorrow and then see how the race starts. Hopefully we make the right choices [on strategy]. Competition for playing time and a meaningful spot in the Texas rotation will be up for grabs on Thursday when the 23rd-ranked Longhorns host Eastern Washington at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Tex.The contest is the second game of the regional round of the Legends Classic.Texas first two games have featured a balanced attack as six Longhorns are averaging double figures in scoring. During Mondays win over Louisiana-Monroe, seven Texas players recorded at least seven points. No Longhorns player saw more than 24 minutes of action against Louisiana-Monroe and nine Texas players were on the court for at least 17 minutes in the easy 80-59 victory. On this team we do have some interchangeable parts, Texas coach Shaka Smart said after the win Monday night. We have some length and athleticism. There are a variety of guys who are playing better on the break. Were running the floor and pushing the ball. Our guys made pretty good decisions tonight. After missing the season opener because of a suspension for a violation of team rules in the offseason, Texas sophomore guard/forward Tevin Mack and sophomore guard Kerwin Roach Jr. had solid performances against Louisiana-Monroe.Mack posted a team-high 14 points (including 4 for 6 on his 3-point shots) in 23 minutes, while Roach added 11 points, four rebounds and two assists without a turnover in 22 minutes for Texas (2-0).Freshman guard Andrew Jones reached double figures in scoring (12 points) for the second straight game to start his collegiate career.Coach Smart is still teaching me as I go and Im emerging as a point guard, Jones said. And this game is only a step for me and learning how to run this team at a young age and still be able to lead and get my players in the position to score.Senior guard Kendal Yancy leads the team in scoring at 15.5 points per game and steals (five) and is tied for the team lead in minutes (30.0 mpg) through the first two contests. He has converted 52.6 percent (10 of 19) from the floor and 81.8 percent (9 of 11) from the free throw line.Texas freshman forward Jarrett Allen was named to the John R. Wooden Award watch list on Tuesday. He previously was named to the watch lists for the Naismith Trophy Mens 50 preseason and for the 2017 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award.Through his first two collegiate contests, Allen is tied for the team lead in rebounding (7.5 rpg) and ranks third on the team in scoring (12.0 ppg) while hitting 11 of 16 field goals (.688) and adding four blocked shots in 30 minutes per game.Eastern Washington (1-1) heads to Austin off an 86-72 loss at Northwestern on Monday. The Eagles were within six points on four occasions in the defeat, two of those instances midway through the second half, but then went four minutes without a field goal.Junior forward Bogdan Bliznyuk scored 25 points for Eastern Washington in the loss while senior forward Jacob Wiley finished with 19 before fouling out, scoring 14 of his points in the second half. There are a lot of pieces there for us, but Northwesterns balance was too much to overcome, Eastern Washington coach Jim Hayford said after Mondays loss. We needed to either find a way to hold them to 10 less points, or we needed to find some more scoring to keep up with them. Right now we are trying to find strengths, roles and cohesion, and we are playing very quality opponents to help figure that out.The Eagles opened the season with a 70-47 victory over Linfield on Nov. 11. They were picked to finish fifth in the Big Sky Conferences preseason poll. Were fighting up a weight class or two this week but its only going to make us better, Hayford said. We need to shake off the travel and figure out how were going to play Texas. Every coach at this time of year is looking at what his team has, how its playing and what they need to do to improve.Thursdays contest marks the first meeting between the Longhorns and Eastern Washington.Eight teams from across the nation are competing in the 10th annual Legends Classic. RICHMOND, Va. -- The Federated Auto Parts 400 certainly didnt provide a brilliant showcase for the upcoming NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup.The 407-lapper Saturday evening at Richmond International Raceway was supposed to be a dramatic build-up for NASCARs elimination-style playoffs but instead served as a tedious, four-hour demonstration of Toyota dominance.Martin Truex Jr. tried to make things exciting, driving the fastest car through the field from 27th place to contend for the win following a pit-lane speeding penalty. But the No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Camry fell short, finishing third behind winner Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson.A race-record 16 cautions slowed the average speed to 85.778 mph, the kind of pace Im hoping to achieve for the drive back home to Indianapolis on Sunday. The highlight of the long evening was a no-holds-barred interview from Ryan Newman after he was eliminated from Chase contention when his fellow Hoosier,?Tony Stewart, triggered the most damaging of the nights many wrecks.Hamlin, who won for the third time this year for Joe Gibbs Racing and entered the Chase as the No. 3 seed, was far less colorful in his postrace remarks. The native of Chesterfield, Virginia, was clearly delighted to have triumphed for the third time at what he considers his home track. Its awesome, Hamlin said. Ive won at home before and every one is better than the next, especially going into the Chase. Any time you can win going into the Chase, it really gives you a huge momentum boost. We were already on a roll, it seems, over the last two months and this just caps it off. This is as peaky as you can get going into the Chase. With none of the 10 tracks in the Chase resembling Richmonds fast 3/4-mile bullring, Saturdays result by itself cant be used as a predictor moving forward. But headed by defending Cup Series champion Kyle Busch, Toyota drivers hold five of the top seven seeds for the Chase.Between the four Joe Gibbs Racing drivers and Truex, who drives for the affiliated Furniture Row Racing team, Toyotas won 13 of the 26 regular-season races and led more than half of all laps.Still, JGRs Hamlin refuses to call himself or any of his fellow Toyota drivers a favorite for the 10-race Chase.I think any one of these guys can get going, Hamlin said. You dont know what they have at the shop waiting to come racing. So I think its really hard to figure out whats going to happen.Chevrolet driver Larson has really stepped up his game over the past month or so, and obviously the No. 4 (2014 Cup Series champion Kevin Harvick)?has great speed week in and week out in his Chevy.Until you get to Chicago and see how the first race goes, to me, thats the barometer of where were really at, Hamlin added. But I like our chances at this point.Truex has led more laps than any other driver in 2016 and posted a pair of race wins. But once again Saturday, he watched a race slip out of his hands.Despite his disappointment in finishing third, Truex said hes feeling good about the upcoming playoffs. Our chances are as good as anybodys, Truex said. I dont think anybody has got a leg up on us, for sure. Weve got fast cars and smart people. The cars have been fast all year long, weve shown that. Weve got to do our job and be consistent like weve done for the past couple weeks, and hopefully we can keep that up.Weve got a lot of confidence, and I think thats really important. We feel like weve got a really good shot at it.With the Toyotas dominating at the front and the many cautions limiting excitement to a minimum, it was up to Newman and Stewart to spice up things. They got together with 37 laps remaining, sweeping in six other cars and bringing out a 21-minute red flag. Newman said that Stewart intentionally drove into him before later launching into an extraordinary verbal attack.I guess he thought he was in a Sprint Car again -- didnt know how to control his anger, Newman said. He should be retired the way he drives. Its just ridiculous.I dont think there was any reason other than him just being bipolar and having anger issues. Google Tony Stewart; youll see all kinds of things hes done. Look it up. YouTube and everything else. Quite the guy.Said Stewart: Hes right. That was the third time he had driven into me tonight. How many times does a guy get a free pass before youve had enough of it? Three times? Thats two more times than I normally let somebody run into me.If Richmond was generally a boring race, does that mean NASCAR fans are in for a boring Chase? Not necessarily. Team Penske features a strong two-car attack for Ford, while Chevrolet hopes that Hendrick Motorsports can regain its championship-winning form.I think there are so many well-prepared cars, and this is going to be a battle, said winning team owner Joe Gibbs. Theres no way you can pick a favorite right now because its a series of three-race playoffs. In the past, Denny has been knocked out and Kyle has been knocked out. You cant afford a bad race. Youve got to be consistent, but you also have got to be on your game and race extremely hard. Its the greatest reality show going. Vapormax Off White Bianche .
