By getting picked, Long allows immediate separation but uses his speed and lateral agility to recover and close the gap. After releasing three-year starter Eric Weddle, Baltimore found the best possible replacement with Earl Thomas. Going on age 30, Thomas has six Pro Bowl nods and three first-team All-Pro selections under his belt. He’s a perfect fit for Don Martindale’s defense and is, in the eyes of many, the closest thing to Ed Reed the league has seen since Reed’s retirement. Eslewhere, the main safety core from last sesaon remains intact, including SS starter Tony Jefferson, Anthony Levine Sr., Chuck Clark, and DeShon Elliott, the latter of which missed all of last season after suffering a broken forearm in the preseason. Tony Jefferson records 100+ tackles In his two seasons with Baltimore Youth James Hurst Jersey , it feels like Tony Jefferson has yet to truly assert himself and reach his full potential. While he’s been a source of impact plays, Jefferson’s strong run-stopping and tackling skills have been somewhat mitigated by struggles in pass coverage. However, entering his 7th career season, Jefferson appears primed for his best performance yet. Having Earl Thomas roaming in the secondary will allow Jefferson to play closer to the line of scrimmage, where he’s at his best. The Ravens lost their leading tackler, C.J. Mosley, in free agency. Jefferson had 74 tackles last year and 96 tackles in his last season with the Cardinals in 2016. Playing in more of a box safety role will give Jefferson more opportunities to utilize his pursuit and nose for the ball. Earl Thomas wins Comeback Player of the YearMore often than not, this award is given to an offensive player, usually a quarterback or one of the skill position players. However, Earl Thomas a great chance to become just the third defensive guy to earn Comeback Player of the Year since 2005. Thomas suffered a broken leg during the Seahawks Week 4 tilt against Arizona last season, marking the third consecutive season in which Thomas didn’t play all 16 games. Returning from injury after an ugly split with his former team Stitched Patrick Onwuasor Jersey , you can bet Thomas will be extra motivated for more reasons than one. The veteran safety had 22 tackles and three interceptions in just four games last season, which earned him a 91.3 overall grade from Pro Football Focus. By all indications, Thomas has almost fully recovered from his tibia injury and is set up for success in his first season with the Ravens. Anthony Levine Sr. plays more snaps at linebacker than safety “Co Cap” has been an underrated contributor on the Ravens defense over the past few seasons. Levine was instrumental in the team’s Week 17 victory over the Browns last season, as he recorded multiple pass deflections in the final two minutes. While safety is more of his natural position, Levine has always been more of a safety/linebacker hybrid. His skill set and versatility is valuable and figures to take on extra importance next season. Baltimore has great depth at safety with DeShon Elliot and Chuck Clark on the depth chart. However, the same can’t be said at linebacker. With Mosley gone, the Ravens will be relying on Patrick Onuwasor and Kenny Young as the starting duo next season. After those two, however, things are a bit murky. Even if they bring in another player in free agency, Levine should be a consistent part of the linebacker rotation. DeShon Elliott forces multiple turnovers Before the signing of Thomas, I was high on DeShon Elliott as a seamless replacement for the departed Eric Weddle. This obviously won’t be the case Youth Patrick Onwuasor Jersey , but Elliott is still a talented player with high upside. It’s unfortunate that his rookie season was cut short before it began, but we saw flashes in the preseason of what Elliott can do when given the opportunity. Fixing the egregious penalties is at the top of their list as they get ready to host Baltimore (1-0) on Thursday night.“You’re just trying to do your job, get after the quarterback,” Williams said, referring to the penalties on him and Dunlap. “Like me, he has to find a way to do what’s within the rules.”The Bengals (1-0) hired defensive coordinator Teryl Austin in the offseason after Paul Guenther left for the Raiders. Austin has emphasized getting turnovers, and the defense won the game with one.Luck was trying to lead the Colts to a winning touchdown when safety Clayton Fejedelem stripped tight end Jack Doyle of the ball near the Cincinnati 15-yard line and returned the fumble for a touchdown with 24 seconds left.The defense had a few glaring shortcomings. Taylor Heinicke fumbled his first snap under center, only to pick it up again and charge ahead for a three yard gain. The team ended up scoring a touchdown on the drive, but it would be the only time today that they would accomplish that feat. The score was knotted up at 10-10 by halftime, but on the very first offensive play after the half, the Falcons went deep on a busted coverage to take a 17-10 lead that they never looked back from.The offense never had much of a chance, as third string left tackle Marshall Newhouse played one of the worst games I have ever witnessed from an NFL offensive lineman, resulting in constant pressure on an already nervous (and injured) backup quarterback. Thankfully, the skills of Christian McCaffrey were enough to make this game respectable as he once again busted through the 100 yard rushing barrier, as well as setting several records on the day. McCaffrey’s records included most receptions in team history by ANY player of any position and most receptions in league history by a running back in a single season.In week 17, I wouldn’t be surprised if the keys to this offense are handed over to third string quarterback Kyle Allen, as he played pretty well in spot duty today, completing all four of his passes. One of TN’s contributors — oline0175 — was gracious enough to answer my questions.1. What are Burns’ strengths and weaknesses, and how do you think he could help the Panthers’ defense in 2019?The first thing to jump out about Burns is his elite first step. Burns uses a long, quick first-step to get angles on an offensive tackle and set up a rush. Once Burns is able to get an angle, he uses his incredible athleticism to either blow by or spin around a blocker. However, he’s struggled when his initial explosiveness doesn’t give him an immediate advantage. Once an offensive tackle gets his hands on Burns, he was often neutralized at the collegiate levels. And the ACC is a far cry from the NFL. But Burns is also athletic enough to drop in coverage if asked, so if he can develop some more moves, the upside is there for Burns to be a leading sack-artist for the Panthers, and a limited liability in coverage.But Burns’ weight will always be an issue at the NFL level, and he will have to work to keep it up. When run at, Burns lacks the bulk to set an edge and is moved by more powerful offensive linemen. Early in Burns’ career, he was known to take plays off but did grow out of that in his last season at Florida State. He had to shake off a culture at FSU that saw several Seminoles checking out; to his credit Youth Marquis Haynes Jersey , Burns responded admirably when addressed by these concerns.Burns should make a day-one impact for the Panthers’ defense. We would expect him to play during most passing situations, but he could develop into an every-down end for the Panthers as the season goes on. Double-digit sacks in his rookie campaign would be a surprise, but not a shock. Burns will bring a pass rush to a team that finished with just 35 total sacks last season. To that end, the Panthers definitely drafted a high-ceiling player at a position of need. 2. Do you think Burns will fit better as a traditional 4-3 defensive end or as a 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL? Why?Burns can play in either defensive setup at the next level. However, he’s at his best when he is getting up the field and rushing the passer, so the 4-3 is preferred. But he will be asked to have more run responsibility in the 4-3 defense, which is a drawback. Committing to Burns means you are going to commit to his skill set, and that means widening him out and letting him get up the field. If Burns is dropping into coverage, he is not using his greatest tool, and that is his elite quickness up the field. Carolina has utilized wide-9 looks in the past and should use them again with Burns.Seminole Everette Brown, who played with the Panthers, is now on staff with Carolina as a defensive assistant, and in a recent interview with our friends Tom Block and Keith Jones of Front Row ’Noles, he said that Burns should be playing with a hand on the ground.3. The Panthers drafted Burns at No. 16 overall. Do you think they got a good value there, or did they overdraft him?This spot seemed like a good get for Burns in the draft. He was ranked in the 20s by most draft experts, but getting an elite pass-rusher in the mid-teens is great value. Pass-rushers are a hot commodity in the NFL Stitched Marquis Haynes Jersey , and Burns was a highly coveted prospect. There may be concern about Burns’ ability to be a three-down player, but the impact he will make as a pass-rusher could quiet those concerns. With the way the board fell, getting Burns at 16 was perfect for the Panthers. Carolina got some help from foolish picks by teams in front of them, and Burns could turn out to be a steal at 16 if he can keep his weight and explosiveness up.4. Which parts of his game do you think will best translate to the NFL? Which parts will he need to work on the most?Burns’ first step will play at any level. He’s a player who has the ability to get a first-step advantage on most offensive tackles in the league. Burns is a top-edge prospect because of his first step/athleticism, and those will not be going away anytime soon. His length will also allow him to bat down a lot of balls at the next level.The reason that Burns was not a top-10 pick is his weight. If Burns were able to play at 270, he would have been a top-5 pick. Burns is going to need to continue to get stronger, gain weight, and show he can hold up against the run. If he cannot do these things, he will struggle to stay on the field.5. If you could compare Burns to a current NFL player, who would you choose and why would you make that choice?The player comparison mentioned most is Leonard Floyd of the Chicago Bears. Floyd and Burns share many of the same physical/athletic traits. This does appear to be an accurate player comparison for Burns as he enters the NFL. The two players were highly regarded, athletic pass-rushers coming out of college, as Floyd drew similar concerns about his ability to hold up against the run. Floyd has made an impact during his time in Chicago, though he’s not been the pass-rusher the Bears had hoped for.
