Moeen Ali admitted he owed the team some runs after his superb unbeaten 155 put England in total control of the second Test with Sri Lanka on day two in Durham. Wholesale Tennessee Titans Jerseys . Ali repaid the faith shown in him by captain Alastair Cook and the selectors, who promoted the stylish left-hander to No 7 at the Emirates Riverside after all-rounder Ben Stokes was ruled out of the three-Test series with a knee injury. The Worcestershire batsman scored his second Test century - his first also came against Sri Lanka at Headingley two years ago - and his maiden score of 150 to help England declare on 498-9, before the tourists were reduced to 91-8 at the close. Moeen Ali scored his second Test century for England on day two of the second Test with Sri Lanka However, Ali - whose 207-ball innings contained 17 fours and two sixes - said he felt he was due a score after struggling for runs while batting down at No 8 during the winter tours of the UAE and South Africa. It is about time really and I feel like I owed the team some runs and to do it today was a great feeling, he told Sky Sports.I struggled a bit this morning for the first half an hour, but once I got in… I have actually been feeling alright, but I just had not really spent the time in the middle. Watch a pick of the action from the second day of the second Test between England and Sri Lanka I think batting at No 8 you do not really get your batting head on and that is quite difficult sometimes. When I spoke to Chef [Alastair Cook] the evening before the game, he told me I was going to bat at No 7 and to just play my natural game and how I normally play at Worcester.I actually enjoy batting No 6, but it has not really fazed me too much when they have asked me to bat at No 8, I am pretty happy. And when they told me I am batting at No 7, I was obviously very happy as well. I have been pretty average with the bat to be honest with you Moeen Ali I am going to have to get some scores if I want to go up the order. I have been pretty average with the bat to be honest with you, but hopefully I can keep batting well.Ali was quick to pay tribute to the tail, though, and in particular Steven Finn, who batted for 37 deliveries for just 10 runs to help the 28-year-old reach his hundred after lunch at the Riverside. If it was not for the way the guys batted, I would not have got the runs and Finny has been playing quite well, he said. I was not sure before lunch how I was going to bat with the tail and then I spoke to Rooty [Joe Root] and a few of the guys and I had a bit more of an idea. The tourists did drop Ali before and after lunch, but the England batsman says he is going to continue playing on instinct. Most of the time, when I have batted a bit of time, I am quite loose and I enjoy batting that way he said. I like playing with a bit of freedom and if I see it, I just go for it and it is something I have tried to tighten up a bit and I have done over the years. Weve picked Ali as our player of the day after his 155no helped England declare on 498-9 But I just accept it, carry on and forget about it pretty quickly.I have been getting out caught at cover in the one-dayers and I feel it is a strength and a weakness. But I am just going to carry on playing and enjoy seeing the ball and hitting it and back my instinct a bit.As for the state of the match, the all-rounder believes Cook will look to enforce the follow-on for the second Test in a row if, as is expected, Sri Lankas last two wickets fail to make another 209 runs. Moeen Ali is congratulated by team-mate Steven Finn after reaching his ton It was perfect, especially the way we bowled towards the end there and to have them eight down has been a brilliant evening, but it has been a brilliant day, Ali said.Going by the way we have been bowling, I think we would try and bowl them out tomorrow and then make them follow on again. It will be really tough as it is a slowish pitch, but the guys have bowled brilliantly. England show some great teamwork in the slips, claiming the wicket of Shaminda Eranga The off-spinner could even get an extended bowl on day three after sending down only four overs - all maidens - on Saturday, with Ali predicting more assistance for the slow bowlers as the game wears on.We felt yesterday that it was going to spin a little bit because of the tackiness, but hopefully as the games goes on, there will be a little bit more spin and hopefully I can get some wickets as well, he said. It takes a lot for a radio talk show host to be lost for words but the caller had done it. Jace Sternberger Jersey . It was the final Sunday of the Premier League season, the national radio station was taking calls from across England, getting fans to give their verdict on their team as another domestic season came to a close. The conversation seemed to be going like many others until the Norwich City fan admitted he wasnt disappointed his team had been relegated out of the Premier League. Stunned silence. This was not supposed to be said. The host got himself together. What do you mean you dont want to be competing at the top level? The guest continued. He talked about wanting to see his club win again, by playing at a level that they can succeed in. Hed been thankful for three years against the best but he had grown tired of watching his team scramble for points, losing 50 league games a long the way. What a novel idea. A fan wanting to see his team win more games than they lose regardless of the opposition. As Vince Lombardi once said if winning isnt everything then why do they keep score? The 2014-15 English football season is less than three weeks old but already it appears the race to be Premier League champions is down to two teams with two others believing they might have a chance. In total, seven teams are in the race for the four Champions League spots and the gap between them and the other 13 has never been bigger. In the last five seasons the top seven have finished in the top eight every year and in the top seven three times, including each of last two. Only Newcastle of 2011-12 and Aston Villa of 2009-10 have entered this exclusive group during this time. So what are fans of the other 13 hoping for? These days it is easy to find out. Read any season preview magazine or listen to club podcasts and the answers are virtually the same. They usually include all or many of these wishes: - Do not get relegated- Stay a long way away from the bottom three all season- Play well at home- Beat one of the big teams- Have a good run in the cup competitions It is easy to say the most important of these factors is the first. But important to whom? Those in charge of running a football club are often fired if they do not achieve this while those who own the club often lose a lot of money if their team drops out of the Premier League so it is clear what the mandate is from those representing a club. With managers, and occasionally, chairman of clubs having weekly press conferences with the media it has never been easier for a clubs message and, subsequently, their priorities to be public. Nevertheless we should be cautious when presuming this is what all fans want. No one wants to see his or her club be relegated, clearly, however just how many would accept this for the final demand on the list? What if we changed it from having a good run to winning a cup? It is a question no fan is comfortable talking about. Well, can we not just have both? It is the moment adults think like children at the ice cream parlor. What do you mean I have to pick only one? Pick one. One side they are content with. Everyone tells them just how important it is and, after all, if their club says its important then it surely is. Remember, just how loyal football fans can be. Their club has no shot at winning the league but their fans feel they are important characters in, what they are told is, the greatest show in sports, the league everyone watches and if you are in it, how could you ever imagine not being apart of it? The other option seems like a pipedream to most. Theyve watched for years the big teams dominate the cup competitions almost as much as the league and many fans now have no idea what it is like to win a cup. This week MK Dons defeated Manchester United by a staggering 4-0 scoreline in the second round of the Capitol One Cup. Formerly known as Wimbledon, their victory brought back memories of the London clubs famous FA Cup final win over Liverpool in 1988 at Wembley. It was an incredible shock that day and one we havent seen repeated very often since. In fact, there have been 56 major domestic Cup finals since (28 League Cup finals and 28 FA Cup finals) and only 11 teams outside the current top seven have won a cup. Of the other 13 currently in the Premier League only Aston Villa, Leicester and Swanseas fans know what that feeling is like. Half of the current Premier League teams have not won a cup since 1980. That is 34 years ago. Think about that for a moment. Football fans 40 or under of half of the teams in the top flight have no idea what it is like to be in a stadium when their team wins a cup. Is it any wonder, then, that these teams will regularly pick Premier League safety over Cup glory? They have never come close to knowing what that feeling is like. Yet, surely the greatest thing a fan of a team can ever experience is seeing them win something. It is the method that North American sports fans are hooked on to. Since Wimbledon won the FA Cup in 1988, 14 different franchises have become Super Bowl winners, 15 different baseball teams have won the World Series and 15 different NHL clubs have lifted the Stanley Cup. It is one of sports great traits. Watching a team overcome obstacles and achieve something so difficult. Yet, despite being told that cup football is a real lottery, the FA Cup have had only nine different winners in this time – each of one of the super seven plus Portsmouth and Wigan. The League Cup has only moderately got a better success rate for the other teams and it is only going to get worse as the top flight teams treat it like a distraction. A new season of cup football got underway this week for the Premier League teams and the same old mistakes were happening again. West Ham were knocked out by Sheffield United of the third tier at home. They made nine changes to their starting XI from their last Premier League match. Leicester got eliminated by Shrewsbury of the fourth tier at home. They made eight changes from their starting XI from their last Premier League match. Another League Two side knocked out a Premier League side after QPR lost 1-0 after making eight changes from their starting XI at Tottenham on Sunday. And then there is the case of Aston Villa. Paul Lambert made seven changes from the game against Newcastle on Saturday and lost 1-0 to League One side Leyton Orient at home. Every man in charge of these clubs has said that cup competitions are important but they are not telling the truth. They are resting their best players in the third week of the season after they have just had three months off from competitive matches and then they have a ready made excuse when they lose. Incredibly they are allowing their teams to play for the next nine months concentrating on the Premier League and the FA Cup and have thrown away the clubs best chance at winning a trophy. Already. And for what? A supposedly better chance at staying in the Premier League? No teams fan base will be more frustrated than Aston Villa. A club deeply rooted in its affection for cup competitions, Villa have now been knocked out of them by four teams from the lower leagues, Leyton Orient, Millwall, Bradford and Sheffield United, in the 26 months since the Scot was appointed manager. Yet he remains in charge. Winners of the first ever League Cup and seven time FA Cup winners, Aston Villa are fully aware their days of being a super power are truly over but the cup competitions were different. Dreams of glory were realistic and Wembley visits put them were they felt they belonged. Any Villa fan in the stadium the day they beat Manchester United in the 1994 Coca-Cola Cup final will tell you what that felt like. They wouldnt have swapped if for a Premier League relegation. They would have swapped it for two. The Premier League? Where the clubs loyal season ticket base has watched 15 wins from 58 home games in the last three years? Overrated. Yet, that is the prospect ahead now for Villa this season. They are not alone, of course, but at the moment they are the poster boys for a club that has completely lost the pulse of its fan base. Having won two cups in the last 20 seasons many of their fans, at least, still know what has been taken away from them when they get knocked out. For the rest their hopes of Premier League survival continue but what kind of fantasies are they? They are simply a hallucination blocking the dream of seeing their team win and the clubs are more than happy to contribute to the nightmare. Darnell Savage Jr. Jersey . Stanley, a fourth-year business administration student from Charlottetown, scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Dalhousie on Friday and tallied again in a 1-0 win over Saint Marys on Sunday.Winnipeg Jets 5 Calgary Flames 3 (Jets 37-35-10, Road 19-18-4) – It was a short-staffed Jets team that was playing on back to back nights that found a way to win the game and end the season with back to back wins. It was the first time the Jets have won back to back games since wins over Phoenix and Nashville coming out of the Olympic break. Starting the game without 10 regulars, the Jets lost Jacob Trouba in the first period and Jim Slater in the second period due to injury. Trouba was hit in the throat by a deflected puck, while Slater suffered a broken finger. Michael Hutchinson, in just his third NHL game, was again very good, especially in the third stopping all 18 shots he faced. The Jets took a 2-0 lead after one period on goals by Michael Frolik (15th) from Trouba and Mark Stuart at 7:23, and Evander Kane (19th) from Bryan Little and Adam Pardy. Kane finishes the season with goals in back to back games, the goal being his 200th NHL point. Shots in the first were 14-8 for the Jets. The Flames got on the board early in the second on a goal from Jiri Hudler, but Carl Klingberg, with his first NHL goal, restored the two goal lead for Winnipeg. Patrice Cormier and Zach Redmond drew assists on the Klingberg goal. The Jets then ran into penalty trouble and for the first time in 10 occasions this season gave up a goal while down two men as Sean Monahan scored his 22nd of the season, and 24 seconds later the game was tied on Chris Russells seventh of the year, also a power play goal. Shots in the second were 12-5 for Calgary as the tough skate Wednesday and playing the night before seemed to be catching up to tthe Jets. Elgton Jenkins Jersey. The Flames needed something out of this game to finish above .500 at home, and with aggressive fore-checking took advantage of a tired Jets team. But Hutchinson shut the door, his best save off Kenny Agostino, a glove save on a one on one situation. Paul Postma with his first of the season put the Jets back in front. Cormier, with his first career two-point game, and Anthony Peluso drew assists. The Flames pulled goaltender Karri Ramo while on a late power play, but Blake Wheeler, with his 28th, into an empty net ended it. Shots in the third were 18-8 Calgary and 38-27 for the Flames over the game. Stuart led the Jets in ice time at 24:25, Slater won 11 of 12 face-offs before leaving the game and Cormier won nine of 12. Hutchison stopped 83 of 88 shots in his three games for a save percentage of .943 and record of 2-1. Coach Paul Maurice was very proud of his squad. “With three minutes left in the second, we had nothing left. Then we found a way to win. Our goalie made some great saves. Losing Trouba and Slater did not help.” And on his team, “they played for each other. They care about each other. There is a lot of the right kind of people in the room. What excites me about this team is the room.” Exit meetings with players will be held this weekend and into next week, with all the call-ups on their way back to St. Johns, while others will be asked to compete for their country at the World Championship in Belarus in May. GM Kevin Cheveldayoff will address the media Wednesday. More on this past season, the off-season, and next season after that. SOCHI, Russia -- The South Korean Olympic Committee has protested the results of the womens figure skating competition, although the sports international governing body has not yet received the letter. James Carpenter Jersey . Also, International Skating Union rules always have required such protests be filed immediately after the event. The Koreans believe the judging was biased and cost Yuna Kim a second gold medal. The 2010 champion finished with silver, behind Russian teenager Adelina Sotnikova. IOC spokesman Mark Adams says any figure skating protest is a matter for the ISU to handle. Much of the uproar over the womens free skate centres on what many perceived as a lack of artistry in Sotnikovas program. Yet her marks were comparable or better than those for the highly artistic Kim. Her technical marks were significantly better. But four unanswered goals to secure a 5-3 win over the New York Islanders was reason enough to savour the moment. Upshall scored twice in the third period as part of the four-goal outburst as the Panthers snapped a four-game losing streak and sent the Islanders to yet another discouraging loss Sunday. Upshalls 11th of the season broke a 3-3 tie at 10:31 of the final period. The goal came on the rebound of shot by Shawn Mattias, who also scored two goals for the Panthers. Upshall tapped the loose puck past backup goaltender Anders Nilsson, who started in place of Evgeni Nabokov. He scored again at 15:26 on the power play to make it 5-3. Tim Thomas made 35 saves for the Panthers (23-31-7). "We came out determined in the third," said the 30-year-old Upshall, a first-round pick by Nashville in 2002 who almost completed a natural hat trick with two minutes left. "We needed a spark and we found it. And we played with an edge." The Islanders entered the third with a 3-1 advantage after Thomas Vanek scored twice in the first and Ryan Strome added a goal late in the second. But Floridas Marcel Goc and Matthias scored early in the third to tie the game at 3 before Upshalls late scores. Vanek opened the scoring at 6:41 with his 20th of the season and added his 21st on the power play at 7:39. The goals were his first since Jan. 25. Vanek was a major acquisition by the Islanders from Buffalo on Oct. 27 and has 17 goals in 47 games for New York. The Austrian left wing said he wants to test free agency this summer. Thus, the Islanders might try to trade him before Wednesdays deadline while they can still garner assets in return. The Islanders lost for the ninth time in 11 games. And it was the 12th time in their disappointing season in which they surrendered a two-goal lead, winning only two of those contests. "We seem to find ways to lose," said Andrew MacDonald, also a pending free agent who could be traded. "Its tough to see games slip away. When you get the lead, you should be able to hold it, most of the time. Trenton Cannon Jersey. Its discouraging." MacDonald also addressed the idea he could be leaving the only NHL organization he has known. "I thought about it today, it weighs on your mind," the 27-year-old defenceman said. "You try not to let it get to you." After Matthias scored for Florida to make it 2-1 at 18:15 of the second, Strome restored the two-goal margin for the Islanders 59 seconds later with his second of the season. Gocs 11th of the season at 3:16 of the third came on a 40-foot floater from just inside the left point to make it 3-2 early in the third. Matthias scored his second of the game and ninth of the season at 4:18. The afternoon matchup was chippy from the start. Rival tough guys Krys Barch of the Panthers and the Islanders Eric Boulton squared off 2:25 into the game. Eight seconds later, a skirmish ensued between Brian Strait of the Islanders and Jonathan Huberdeau of Florida. "We didnt quit, we stayed involved," added Matthias. "We played a real gritty game and were glad to get the two points." The Islanders beat Toronto in overtime last Thursday in their first game back following the Olympic break. But they were drubbed 6-1 on Saturday by the New Jersey Devils as Jaromir Jagr scored his 700th career goal. The Islanders played without defenceman Travis Hamonic, suspended one game for instigating a fight near the end of Saturdays loss. NOTES: The Islanders activated forward Frans Nielsen before the game and sent Mike Halmo to AHL Bridgeport. Nielsen, who has 18 goals, suffered a broken hand when he was slashed against Colorado on Feb. 8. ... The Islanders (23-32-8) head out for a four-game Canadian road trip -- Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver before returning home to face San Jose on March 14. ... SHEFFIELD, England -- Italys Vincenzo Nibali displayed his riding smarts at the Tour de France, winning Stage 2 on Sunday and taking the yellow jersey after a well-choreographed attack on rivals in the postindustrial English city known for "The Full Monty. Jason Pierre-Paul Jersey ." The Astana team leader nicknamed "The Shark" for his road savvy took the final lead in a cycling dance of sorts with other title hopefuls, who took turns in front in the last stretch through a sea of fans from York to Sheffield. Nibali perhaps had more at stake: The 29-year-old rider has won the Italian Giro and Spains Vuelta, but has never captured cyclings showcase event. The victory on Sunday gave him both his first Tour stage win and yellow jersey, and sent a message that he could contend to take it home from Paris in three weeks. With less than two kilometres left, Nibali escaped a 21-man breakaway bunch at the end of the 201-kilometre course over nine heath-covered hills of Yorkshire, and held off their late surge. England is hosting the first three Tour stages this year. GERMAN LOSES YELLOW JERSEY Marcel Kittel, a powerful German sprinter who often struggles on climbs, trailed nearly 20 minutes back and lost the yellow jersey that he had captured by winning Stage 1. While the Italian won the fight to the line, under the shadow of a black Sheffield Forgemasters tower, defending champion Chris Froome of Britain and two-time winner Alberto Contador of Spain are focusing more on the overall race -- which ends July 27 on Paris Champs-Elysees. Overall, Nibali leads 20 other riders by two seconds, including Froome in fifth place and Contador in eighth. A six-man breakaway bunch tried its chances early, but got swallowed up by the pack with less than 40 kilometres left. Then, the big race stars moved to the front, splitting the pack. Contador, Froome, and Americans Andrew Talansky and Tejay van Garderen all spent time at the front. At times, they mustered bursts of speed or zipped across with width of the road in tactical manoeuvrs. "In the finale, a lot of contenders were making moves: Nibali ended up taking two seconds on us," Froome said. "Its not a big margin. For me, it was about staying out of trouble to stay at the front, and avoiding any major issues or splits. "Im tired, but I hope everyones tired after a day like today." TIME TO WORK, ASTANA Dave Brailsford, boss of Froomes Team Sky, said the leaders actually "were all hesitant, because nobody wanted the jersey." In the cycling playbook, the yellow shirt brings both glory and responsibility. Brailsford said: "Astana will have to now defend it, which is pretty good for anybody else. "Perfect. Theyve got to work." Nibali didnt dare claim he might keep it all the way to Paris, saying "the Tour de France doesnt stop here: We have three weeks to go, and very tough and tricky stages lie ahead." Mondays stage should be a far less grueling ride: Riders cover 155 kilometres from Cambridge to London, where the pack will finish on the Mall not far from Big Ben and Westminster Abbey. CROWDS FOR A CLASSIC STAGE The course Sunday resembled that of historic one-day races known as "classics," which often feature hilly terrain. Michael Rodgers, an Australian on Contadors Tinkoff-Saxo Bank team, called it "a bit of a special stage, like the Amstel Gold Race, but with 20 times the people." New roads for cyclings greatest race also mean new audiences, some of whom are so enthusiastic and eager for a selfie with the pack that they might not realize the hazards of getting too close to the riders as they go by. Untold thousands turned out just hours after one of the biggest British stars in the race, Mark Cavendish, dropped out because of pain from a separated right shoulder sustained in a crash Saturday. "There are thousands and thousands of people. Its great but its also dangerous," Contador said. Race officials say millions of fans have flooded the course route in just the first two stages. While Yorkshire doesnt have ascents on a par with the Alps or Pyrenees in France, riders faced nine low- to mid-grade climbs. The hardest was the Holme Moss pass. The steepest was also the shortest: The 800-meter Jenkin Road pass had an average gradient of 10.8 per cent. Several riders crashed. Simon Gerrans, who went down with Cavendish in Saturdays stage, also spilled -- as did van Garderen and Joachim Rodriguez, the third-place finisher in the 2013 Tour. All recovered to finish the stage. On the up-and-down, picturesque course, the 197-rider peloton scaled a narrow, cobblestone hill in Haworth, where the Bronte sisters -- the famed 19th-century novelists -- lived when their father was parson in the town. Brent Grimes Jersey . Dumont, a fifth round draft pick of the Canadiens in 2009, has four assists and 20 penalty minutes in 12 games with the Bulldogs this season. No such luck. Wiggins owned the end of Parkers impressive homecoming. The Kansas star scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half, outplaying Parker down the stretch and helping the fifth-ranked Jayhawks knock off No.The Metropolitan Division-champion Pittsburgh Penguins will close out their regular season on Sunday night in a home matchup with the Ottawa Senators. The Penguins will head into the postseason as the second seed and will have home-ice advantage against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Pittsburgh was coming off back-to-back shootout wins before suffering a 4-3 loss in overtime to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday. Defenseman Kris Letang scored on a backhander with 36.8 seconds left in regulation, but the Flyers won it on Mark Streits goal with 2:50 to play in overtime. James Neal totaled a goal and two assists for the Penguins, while Jussi Jokinen also tallied. Marc-Andre Fleury ended up with only 17 saves in defeat. With nothing on the line, the Penguins sat defenseman Brooks Orpik and forward Chris Kunitz. Several skaters also could get a rest tonight, though captain Sidney Crosby still wants his team to focus on playing a good game. "I think just to follow up this performance from today. As a whole, we want to feel good about our game," Crosby said of todays finale. "I think there were some things from today that I think were good. For a game that doesnt move us anywhere, it didnt have a lot of bearing on us, we came with the right attitude, the right mindset." Letang, meanwhilee, scored his first goal since Jan. Caleb Benenoch Jersey. . 23 in his second game since returning from a 10-week absence while recovering from a stroke. "Im just trying to get back into it," Letang said. "The result is disappointing, but I think we played a good game overall. I think if we go into the playoffs that way, were going to win games." The Senators will not be going into the playoffs, but can end the campaign with a season-high fifth straight victory. They matched their previous best of four consecutive wins with Saturdays 1-0 decision over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Craig Anderson stopped 28 shots for his fourth shutout of the season and 26th of his career. Jason Spezza had the only goal of the game, blasting a one-timer into the net during a second-period power play for his 23rd goal of the season. "Were playing games that dont mean much in the standings as far as getting us into the Stanley Cup Playoffs, which is what its all about," said Ottawa head coach Paul MacLean. "But at the same time, finishing our home schedule like we are is way better." Ottawa wrapped the campaign with an 18-17-6 record at home. The Sens are 18-14-8 on the road. ISTANBUL, Turkey -- Fernando Torres scored a valuable away goal for Chelsea in a 1-1 draw at Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday, but the Premier League side left Istanbul frustrated at its failure to build on its superior start. Ryan Kesler Jersey . Torres scored the first goal by an English team in the knockout phase of the Champions League this season when he met Cezar Azpilicuetas cutback in the ninth minute of their first leg match in the last 16. But Chelsea failed to make the most of its counterattacks and the Turkish champions equalized in the second half after gaining in confidence and cutting out their defensive mistakes. Aurelien Chedjou put the ball past goalkeeper Petr Cech in the 64th after connecting with Wesley Sneijders corner. "I wouldnt want to say thats a great result, we all now know what a strong team they are," Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard told British broadcaster Sky Sports. "So (Im a) little bit disappointed today really at halftime it wasnt more than one nil up. I think we played very well first half, we controlled it. "They didnt have any chances and we have about four or five very good counterattacks, and we didnt make more of them." Unlike Chelsea, Real Madrid is virtually certain of a place in the quarterfinals after Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo each scored a brace in a spectacular 6-1 victory at Schalke in the nights other game. By contrast, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho was already bracing for his sides second leg match in west London on March 18. "They have very powerful strikers and we are going to have a difficult time at Stamford Bridge -- thats for sure," Mourinho said. The pre-match build-up centred on the Galatasaray striker Didier Drogba facing the team he won the Champions League with in 2012. But it was another former Premier League regular who played a key role as Chelsea took an early lead -- for the wrong reasons. Former Arsenal defender Emmanuel Eboue was dispossessed too easily inside the Chelsea half, allowing Mourinhos side to launch a counterattack down the left flank. Andre Schurrle fed the advancing defender Azpilicueta, who cut the ball back for the unmarked Torres to side-foot into an open net. The hosts were leaving themselves too exposed, and unable to cause Chelsea many problems. The closest they came to levelling before the break was Izet Hajrovic sending a shot over the top. The winger, though, was substituted in the 31st, with Yekta Kurtulus coming on as coach Roberto Mancini responded to the poor start. "The game started and we did three of four mistakes," Mancini said. "Maybe in the first half we played too deep, with fear." But Chelsea would pay for not making the most of its confident start, with Ramires volleying over. Galatasarays defence looked as fragile at the start of the second half. Felipe Melos clearance went straight to Eden Hazard, who ran through the centre and released Torres. Although the striker broke through the defence, his shot was saved by goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. "We had too much respect for Chelsea ... we should have played more offensively without problems like in the second," Mancini said. Galatasaray recovered from its shaky start and proved a much tougher opponent after the break. "We had chances to kill the game," Mourinho said. "Im not critical of my strikers because my strikers did a very good game, but overall when we go to counterattack situations we are missing the last pass, the last control, the last choice ... the second goal would have changed the story of the game." It never came. The woodwork did deny Galatasaray. Drogba headed down from Sneijders delivery to Selcuk Inan, who hit the post. But Mancinis side found the target barely a minute later. Sneijder swung in a corner from the left, Chedjou turned the ball in from close range after getting in front of Chelsea captain John Terry. "We probably deserved to score another goal," Mancini said. Indeed, Cech only spared Chelsea from travelling back to London needing to overturn a 2-1 deficit, by tipping over Alex Telles swerving shot after William gave the ball away. "We werent passing it like we was in the first half," Lampard said. "A few things were disappointing. Its one of those results -- you are kind of happy with it, but we have still got a lot of work to do." Corey Perry Jersey . Brazilian striker Brandao opened the scoring with a header in the 55th minute before winger Franck Tabanou volleyed home from close range to double the lead in the 61st. AUBURN HILLS, Mich. Wholesale Jets Jerseys . - LeBron James came leaping in to try to stop Jodie Meeks as the Detroit guard drove to the basket during the final seconds of the third quarter. After colliding with Meeks, James put his hands out to break his fall before sliding across the floor on his stomach.I was scared, because I broke my wrist on a fall like that in high school, James said. I was either going to land on my face or break the fall with my hands, but when I hit, both my arms went numb. Im OK now — it was just something like a stinger — but I wasnt sure at first.James barely missed any game time after that anxious moment, and he finished with 32 points to help the Cleveland Cavaliers to their seventh straight victory Tuesday night, 103-95 over the Pistons. Kyrie Irving matched his season high with 38 points. The Cavs never trailed in the second half, but when James hit the deck and didnt immediately get up, that was plenty to be concerned about. That is obviously a time of worry, which is the understatement of the year, Cleveland coach David Blatt said. In a situation like that, you are just hoping he is OK.James quickly came back in the game, and his two-handed breakaway dunk early in the fourth put Cleveland up 80-68.Greg Monroe had 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Pistons, who pulled within eight and had the ball late in the fourth quarter, but Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was unable to connect from 3-point range. James drew a foul at the other end and made both free throws to make it 88-78 with 2:56 to play.Caldwell-Pope was fouled by James while shooting a 3-pointer with 2:00 remaining, and that trio of free throws made it 90-83. The Pistons got the ball back, but Andre Drummond missed a layup, and Irving connected from beyond the arc.The Cavs avenged a 23-point home loss to Detroit late last month. That game was part of a seven-game winning streak for the Pistons, but now Detroit is struggling to overcome the loss of Brandon Jennings, who ruptured his left Achilles tendon last weekend and will miss the rest of the season.IRVINGS BIG NIGHTDetroit led 19-17 after a first quarter in which the teams combined to shoot 1 for 16 from outside the paint. Cleveland shrugged off that rough start and reached 100 points for the eighth straight game.Irving was 6 of 10 from 3-point range. The rest of the Cavs went 3 of 24.Thats the luxury of playing with a great player like LeBron. When hes on the floor, you know there are going to be things opened up for the rest of you, Irving said. Tonight, we had a lot of open shots, and we got enough of them to go down.UNDERMANNEDD.J. Augustin, Detroits starting point guard now in Jennings absence, had 19 points and nine assists, but the Pistons have lost three in a row. That skid began with the game at Milwaukee when Jennings got hurt, but coach Stan Van Gundy says the team needs to move forward without him.Weve got good enough players to win, Van Gundy said. We had good enough players in there tonight to win. We just needed to do a couple of things better, and were not going to come in here after every loss now and talk about Brandons effect on it — at least Im not.Cleveland outscored Detroit 50-48 in the paint. Drummond had 12 points and 17 rebounds but shot just 6 of 17.TIP-INSCavaliers: Cleveland had won its last four games by double digits before Tuesday. ... The Cavs are without big man Anderson Varejao, who like Jennings ruptured his left Achilles tendon.Pistons: Detroit had 18 turnovers while Cleveland committed only nine.UP NEXTCavaliers: Host Portland on Wednesday night.Pistons: Play at Philadelphia on Wednesday night. This venue holds so many memories for the band and so many pillars within our career that it keeps a special place in our heart. Its very difficult to explain what Montreal means to the band - for many years it was home to both of JM, and to Stuart… Subsequently making it a second home for me, as I was traveling up there every week to work on material, especially during the Transmission, and Triptych years. I was literally bouncing off the bus walls… I made my way inside as I usually do when we first arrive at a venue to scope it out when it is empty. I imagined all of the crazy friends and fans losing it to the show later that night.Later we headed off to CHOM FM for a quick video chat, then into see one of the most respected on air personalities of our time, Mr. TooTall! Its always good to get a blessing from the rock n roll doctor himself… Feel better TooTall! The show that night did not miss a single step… From sound, to lights, to the band, to the fan reaction, it was truly outstanding! For me this show fell in the top five of all time… There, yes, I said it… Of all time! Simply unbelievable…Following the show is also a great moment in Montreal because of the smoked meat sandwiches we bring in for our technical crew and band. God bless Schwartz!I tell you, I really dont like having to go to sleep at 2 AM, only to be woken up at 4 AM to clear immigration to get into the US. But, in all honesty it wasnt bad at all… As a matter of fact, it was the easiest border crossing with the band I have ever, ever completed. When you live in a border town next to Detroit, any other border crossing seems like a cakewalk. I understand thhat they have a very serious job to do, but sometimes it is so over-the-top with the questions when youre literally going to a hockey or baseball game with tickets in hand. Jachai Polite Jersey. Our tour manager was ready for all the questions and had all of our papers and passports in order, so we were literally the only people in the Watertown area border crossing and it flew through in around 20 minutes. Back to bed! What a sleep!… I dont know what happened there, but I got an extra six or seven hours all the way to Buffalo! This is some kind of weird record for OL JB...I was very happy to see the streets of Buffalo look almost completely bare of snow… What a crazy week this poor community has had! We had some friends down at our sound check at The Town Ballroom. I dont know if my eyes are deceiving me, but this club does not look like it can hold 1000+ people...this is going to be absolutely ridiculous tonight!Once again, the band killed it live… I hope I really dont come off sounding like Im boasting, because Im not… We are just simply killing it lately. We are back, we are definitely back. After the show I went directly back onto the bus to dry off. Some of our friends came on and I decided to crank up the tunes and have a front lounge dance party… No kidding...dance party. No, I cant dance, but I sure look funny trying. No, there are no pictures of me trying! ;)Once loadout was complete in Buffalo, the bus had to roll so we got dropped off at our hotel as the band was going to fly to Winnipeg the next day. After one and a half hours sleep, we headed to the Buffalo airport to fly to Winnipeg.Ill come back with more details of our days off and press day in Winnipeg in a few days. SHANGHAI, China -- Canadian Milos Raonic has advanced to the third round of the Shanghai Masters with a win over Fernando Verdasco of Spain. Chris Chelios Jersey . The 10th seed from Thornhill, Ont., edged the Spaniard 7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-3 on Wednesday. Raonic is making a late-season run at qualifying for the ATP Finals, as well, reaching back-to-back finals in Bangkok and Tokyo the last two weeks. He won the title in Thailand but lost to Juan Martin del Potro in Japan. Hes 10th in the standings for the ATP Finals, trailing Richard Gasquet of France by less than 300 points. Raonic will play No. 8 Stanislas Wawrinka in the next round after the Swiss defeated South African Kevin Anderson 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5). Fellow Canadian Vasek Pospisil of Vernon, B.C., was eliminated following a 7-5, 7-6 (4) loss to Gael Monfils of France. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic survived a scare when he landed awkwardly on his right foot and recovered to beat Spains Marcel Granollers 6-2, 6-0. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal had fewer problems in their second-round matches. Federer rebounded from an early break to defeat Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-4, 6-3, while Nadal, who reclaimed the No. 1 ranking this week, dispatched Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine 6-3, 6-2. Djokovic hit a running backhand in the first game of the second set and then leaped in the air, wincing in pain. He called for a medical timeout after the game to have his foot wrapped and appeared slightly tentative after returning to the court, not bothering to chase after a couple of shots. The Serb dominated the rest of the match, however, closing it out in 70 minutes to set up a third-round match with Italian Fabio Fognini, who advanced when Tommy Robredo retired with a wrist injury while trailing 7-6 (3), 2-1. Djokovic said the problem wasnt serious, without elaborating about where specifically he felt the pain. "It was just an awkward movement," he said. "I was running and I made a quick movement that caused a sharp pain. Its all good now," he added succinctly when questioned further. Federer, the fifth seed, had more unforced errors (29) than winners (19) in his first match since a fourth-round loss at the U.S. Open, but he made quick work of the 22nd-ranked Seppi. "Even though it didnt feel like Ive been away for a long time, you kind of know it," Federer said. "Instead of just thinking point for point, what do I want to do, your mind starts to wander -- not in a bad way, but its just not that natural yet." Federer next plays Monfils, with a possible quarter-final with Djokovic looming. Two other top players, Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin del Potro, also came through with victories despite struggling with injury and illness. Fourth-seeded Berdych rebounded from a back injury sustained in the semifinals of the China Open last week to defeat Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (5), 6-2. He said after his last match he could barely stand or walk when he retired against Nadal. "I wouldnt say (my back is) 100 per cent, but I decided I was competitive enough to go on court and try to play," he said. "Looks like it was a smart decision." Del Potro, meanwhile, overcame a fever and 50 winners from big-hitting German Philipp Kohlschreiber to advance 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4). After the match, del Potro said he started feeling sick on Tuesday night and relied on his serve to win the match since running was difficult. The Argentine withdrew from the doubles to rest for his next match against 11th-seeded Tommy Haas, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over German compatriot Daniel Brands. Like Raonic, del Potro and Berdych are also fighting for spots in the ATP Finals, a task made slightly easier by the withdrawal on Wednesday of Andy Murray, who is recovering from back surgery. Del Potro and Berdych would qualify for the eight-man field by making the final in Shanghai. Federer needs to do a bit more work -- hes in seventh place in the standings, with a number of players within striking distance. Two of them moved into the next round on Wednesday: No. 7 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Wawrinka. American John Isner, an outside shot for London, however, was ousted by Argentine Carlos Berlocq 6-4, 7-6 (4). Frans Nielsen Jersey . Weise will have his hearing with the NHL head office over the phone, while the league has requested an in-person hearing with Kassian. Oilers centre Sam Gagner suffered a broken jaw after getting hit with a high stick from Kassian in Edmontons 5-2 win. Jonathan Ericsson Jersey . The 2010 batting champ showed what he can do when hes mostly healthy. Gonzalez homered, doubled and singled in his return to the lineup, and the Colorado Rockies snapped a five-game losing streak with a 13-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night. http://www.hockeyredwings.info/authentic-terry-sawchuk-red-wings-jersey/ . The Canucks figured to be active prior to Wednesdays trade deadline, getting a jump on things the previous day when they dealt goaltender Roberto Luongo to the Florida Panthers for netminder Jacob Markstrom and forward Shawn Matthias.Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hi Kerry, Thanks for your time, even if this doesnt make it to the site, Id love to hear your opinion on this: In the second period during the Blues-Sabres game on Tuesday, the Sabres took exception to a hit at the whistle on Tyler Ennis by Ian Cole. I admit Cole sometimes acts before he thinks but I think this was a clean play, it just looked violent because Cole has 50 pounds on him and the boards broke his fall! The referees arms didnt go up signaling a penalty. As expected, the Sabres took it in their own hands and started a scrum to even the score. I have no problem with that. What I have a problem with is the referees tack on a roughing minor to Ian Cole after the melee? What warranted the penalty call? The fights? I dont see how if it wasnt a penalty before the fight, its a penalty after the fight? Buffalo retaliated, score settled. It seemed futile at that point. And to make matters worse, to start the third period, Buffalos Cody McCormick starts a fight with Alex Steen and Steen gets a double-minor for roughing giving the Sabres a power play. Why? If any extra minor should be called, it should be on McCormick for instigating or roughing! Can you tell me what these referees were thinking? If there is a valid explanation, maybe it will help me stay calm next time? Thank you, Josh Bartlett ----- Josh, I thank you for your question and congratulate you for making it to the Cmon Ref site! Unfortunately there really isnt a valid explanation as why to why the St. Louis Blues received an extra minor penalty in either of these altercations; especially in the second dust-up that was initiated just 17 seconds into the third period by Cody McCormick and Marcus Foligno. None of us can ever know what the refs were actually thinking but let me provide my perspective based on the referees position, focus and their reactions (or lack thereof) to what was taking place in the moment. On the first play in question, at 13:11 of the 2nd period, Ian Cole was in the act of finishing a check on Tyler Ennis after the Buffalo youngster shot the puck. The contact, delivered at the goal line, was more of a shove than a solid body check but caused Ennis to lose his balance and fall awkwardly into the end boards. Based on a resulting degree of awkwardness or violence that a player is shoved, hit or falls into the boards, I have seen occasions when a minor penalty has been assessed; more on the result than the act itself. Referee Gord Dwyer was very close to the incident; so close in fact that when Ennis fell into the boards, his stick blade whacked the referee in the knee. If there was any initial thought process by the referee to raise his arm and assess a penalty to Cole, which I very much doubt, we will never know. Instead of raising his non-whistle hand to signal a penalty, Dwyer used the hand to grab his right knee and expressed a grimacing look of pain on his face. Since we dont know the referees intent beyond the fact that neither of them raised an arm to signal an infraction, it is more probable to sspeculate that the minor penalty assessed to Cole was determined through the conference of officials in the aftermath of the scrum and fights. Kris Draper Jersey. While it might not have appeared to be worthy of a penalty in the refs mind initially, I can understand that he might have reflected on how hard Ennis struck the end boards and then changed his mind. Im relatively okay with his prerogative to change his mind. What Im not okay with is the solid pop that Ennis delivered to the face of Ian Cole as he was being engaged by the Buffalo cavalry and in clear view of the referee that went unpenalized. The shot delivered by Ennis on Cole caused Alexander Steen to grab Ennis and resulted in their fight. If Cole was to be assessed a late minor in hindsight or otherwise, then Ennis also deserved a roughing minor. My personal preference is to see a minor penalty imposed against any player who leads the cavalry charge following a hit on one of his teammates; legal or otherwise! Too often, we see a player have to defend himself when he administered a perfectly legal but hard check. The double minor penalty assessed to Steen is beyond confusing to me. In my first season in the NHL, linesman John DAmico gave me a piece of great advice that stuck with me forever. John told me to know what players are on the ice at all times, whether they change on the fly or during a stoppage. John also said that just because the puck isnt moving, that doesnt mean that your eyes and your brain stop moving as well. Once play stopped, John advised me it was time to turn up the radar because things can happen and you dont want to be caught off guard! I never forgot that great advice offered by the future Hall of Famer. At the first stoppage of play, 17 seconds into the 3rd period, Steen came onto the ice with his line for an end zone face-off. On their way to the Sabres players bench, Cody McCormick and Marcus Foligno took a route that allowed them to shove and engage Steen in obvious retribution for his previous fight with Ennis. In this moment, referee Mike Leggo can be seen standing near centre ice, facing the players bench with his arm raised to signal the line change has been completed and could not have possibly witnessed what initiated the altercation. Referee Dwyer is off camera but would have been standing on the goal line on the players bench side of the ice. Given the penalty assessment, referee Dwyer must have been preoccupied and not dialed in to the flow of players coming and going. Once the altercation started, St. Louis had one extra player on the ice as a result of the change and referee Leggo can be seen waving Alex Pietrangelo back toward the St. Louis bench. Steen handled himself very well in containing McCormick during their wrestling match. So well perhaps, that the referees, not seeing who started the altercation, might have assessed Steen an extra two minutes as the aggressor. If either of the referees had enjoyed the benefit of working with John DAmico early in their career, I would suspect that McCormick would have been assessed an extra minor for roughing and quite possibly a misconduct penalty as the instigator of the altercation. That would have been just. ATLANTA -- Paul Goldschmidt doesnt often stand and stare at his homers. Johnny Bower Jersey . This time he had to look, just to make sure his drive stayed fair. He liked what he saw. Wade Miley earned his first win since early May, Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat Atlanta 3-1 on Sunday to end the Braves nine-game winning streak. Goldschmidt ripped an inside pitch from Alex Wood toward the left-field seats in the third inning. He said he immediately figured it had home run distance. He was just hoping the ball would stay fair, and it hit the foul pole for his 16th homer. "I wasnt sure," Goldschmidt said. "I knew it probably had the distance but it started fair and was going, so that was one of the few times I was watching to see what was going to happen. I saw it hit the pole and come down. I was pretty happy." Miley (4-6) allowed one run on five hits and one walk in 6 2-3 innings. He struck out eight. The left-hander was 0-3 in his previous nine starts and had not won since beating the White Sox on May 10. The win snapped his streak of five straight no-decisions. Miley shrugged when asked if he was relieved to finally get his fourth win. "You really cant control that," he said. "Youve just got to go out and try to give your team a chance to win. Thats the plan. You dont go out to try to get wins, you just try to get quality innings and get your offence on the field and we were able to do that and able to score enough runs today." Wood (6-7) allowed two runs on only three hits and three walks in seven innings. B.J. Upton was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts to end his career-best 11-game hitting streak for NL East-leading Atlanta. The loss kept the Braves from sweeping their third straight series. "We had a great run, had a great homestand," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. Before the game, the Diamondbacks traded right-hander Brandon McCarthy and cash to the Yankees for left-hander Vidal Nuno. Pinch-hitter Nick Evans run-scoring double off Luis Avilan in the ninth pushed Arizonas lead to two. Evans drove in Martin Prado, who singled off Anthony Varvaro and stole second base. Addison Reed gave up a leadoff single to Tommy La Stella in the ninth before striking out Christian Bethancourt. Reed wrapped up his 20th save when Ryan Doumit hit into a double play. Arizona right-hander Brad Ziegler gave up a leadoff single to Andrelton Simmons in the eighth. With one out, Ziegler walked Justin Upton, and the runners advanced on Jason Heywards groundout. Ziegler struck out Chris Johnson to end the inning. Walks hurt both starting pitchers. Wood issued a walk to Miley to open the third inning before Goldschmidts two-out homer gave the Diamondbacks a 2-0 lead. Goldschmidt, who had an infield single in the first, had two of Arizonas three hits off Wood. "Thats baseball for you," Wood said. "You go into the game telling yourself that theres one guy you dont want to let beat you and then he ends up beating you." Miley walked Justin Upton to open the fourth. He scored from second on Johnsons single up the middle. Miley didnt allow another hit until Bethancourt singled with two outs in the seventh. Evan Marshall got the final out of the inning after walking pinch-hitter Dan Uggla. What about that rocket throw to third base Tuesday night? The one you made when the inning was already over? Before it was even translated into Spanish for him, the Los Angeles Dodgers slugger broke into the sheepish grin of a forgetful schoolboy who keeps getting sent to the principals office for the same silly offence. And he was ready with a playful response: Blame it on teammate Juan Uribe. See, only a few days before, Uribe and third base coach Lorenzo Bundy, who doubles as a translator for Puig, were marveling out loud about how the young right fielder hadnt goofed in more than a week. Turns out, they jinxed him! At least thats the way Puig tells it. "So when he made the mistake last night," Bundy said Wednesday, "Juan came off the field, he was looking for me and he goes, Lorenzo, hes back! Hes back!" The Dodgers are accustomed to those sort of untamed miscues from Puig -- over-exuberant baserunning, wild throws from the outfield, huge hacks at the plate. They laughed off his latest gaffe against the New York Mets because it was harmless: Puig caught a routine fly for the third out and immediately whipped a laser beam across the diamond to hold an opposing runner who was only headed back to the bench. Puig got razzed in the dugout, for sure. He may have forgotten how many outs there were, but hes been right on point at the plate. The second-year star from Cuba has hit safely in 18 of his last 19 games, batting .408 with seven homers and 23 RBIs during that stretch. Hes all over the National League leaderboard, ranking second in RBIs (37) and slugging percentage (.610), fourth in on-base percentage (.427) and fifth in home runs (10). Puig credits Uribe and fellow teammate Adrian Gonzalez, among others, with helping him polish his game. Hes laying off bad pitches and having more disciplined at-bats. Hes hitting the cutoff man and eliminating fundamental mistakes on the bases. "I just think hes making adjustments," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "Really his whole game has just matured, so I think that maturity has really been the key for him." All without losing the unique effervescence thats already made him a fan favourite around the majors. "Guys tthat love to play, you can just see it. Borje Salming Jersey. And I think thats what people love about Yasiel," Mattingly said. "You get that Little League quality thats just lovin playing baseball. And I think thats what people really like seeing. A guy that plays hard with that energy, and then the talent." The 23-year-old Puig is a rare talent, indeed. That quickly became clear when he burst into the majors with a bang last June. But hes also riled opponents with his antics on the field. Some dont like the way he flips his bat when he connects. Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner took exception to that this season and barked at Puig after he rounded third. "Its his style. Its been a way that hes played baseball for a long time," Bundy said, translating for Puig. "He doesnt really worry about the other team or what other players think about him -- other than his team, our team. "He says he tries to play the game hard, he tries to play the game happy. He wants to have a good time when hes playing. He said this is a game of entertainment. He doesnt really play it to offend people, but he does have a good time playing the game of baseball. But he doesnt really worry about the opinions of other teams." Details of Puigs dangerous escape from Cuba in June 2012 were revealed last month in a story first reported by Los Angeles Magazine. According to court documents in a federal lawsuit in Miami, smugglers who helped Puig leave his country on a speedboat have made death threats against him and a boxer who says he defected with Puig. The outfielder signed a $42 million, seven-year contract with the Dodgers, a record for a Cuban defector. And in his first visit to Citi Field this week, Puig has put on quite a show. He got three hits and reached base five times in Tuesdays series-opening victory over the Mets. He and Hanley Ramirez hit back-to-back homers in a 4-3 win Wednesday night. Asked if hed had a chance to do any sightseeing in New York, Puig said he planned to get to the Statue of Liberty on Thursday and maybe the Empire State Building. Wearing a white T-shirt with "PUIG" written in big red, white and blue letters, he said hes still not used to all the attention and he misses his friends and former teammates in Cuba. "I think hes listening to his body and hes doing what makes him happy and thats what life is about ultimately. On December 20, 2000 in a game at Madison Square Garden, Tyson Nash of the visiting St. Louis Blues made reference to Theo Fleurys recent return from the NHL imposed substance abuse program that deeply hurt Fleury. Following a very powerful apology, Tyson Nash, to this day claims the event was life altering and career changing for him to recognize that no matter how badly he wanted to win certain things and comments were completely "off-sides"! Tyson Nash credits me as the referee in that game for "playing Dad" in providing him with an epiphany moment.)Back to the Hawks-Mighty Ducks game. After issuing a non-negotiable warning to both the Hawks player and his Coach I would have quick-triggered a penalty for interference immediately following the opening puck drop (Rule 56--Interference; rule 76.6--violations--In the conduct of any face-off at any of the nine (9) face-off spots on the playing surface, no player facing-off shall make any physical contact with this opponents body by means of his own body or by his stick except in the course of playing the puck after the face-off has been completed. For violation of this rule, the Referee may, at his discretion impose a minor penalty or penalties on the player(s) whose action(s) caused the physical contact.)Following the celebration of the Hawks goal a minor penalty for roughing would be warranted and assessed to Hawks player for striking the Mighty Ducks player in the head and knocking off his helmet. (Rule 51--roughing is the punching motion with the hand or fist, with or without the glove on the hand, normally directed at the head or face of an opponent.)In their final game of the regular season, the Ducks find themselves two points out of a playoff spot. Knowing a tie would end their season, the coach Bombay pulls the goaltender to add an extra attacker. After the Ducks win the face-off Fulton Reed turns the puck over, he chases down the man and hits him to take the puck and score the game winning goal. Kerry, do you view Fultons hit on the back-check as a hit from behind? Had the penalty been called the Ducks likely would not have another chance to score and therefore would have fallen short of the playoffs.Fulton Reed executed what is typically deemed to be a "legal open-ice push" with his glove even though the shove occurred from behind. A play of this nature generally occurs in cycle battles down low and the shove executed by the player on the chase is allowed so long as the puck carrier isnt launched into the boards or goal frame. What makes Fulton Reeds push on this play more difficult for a referee to allow is the fact that the shove results in a takedown and change of possession during the course of a breakaway. The ref would be hard-pressed however to come up with an appropriate foul terminology on this play since it doesnt fall under the specific language contained in the rules for a hit from behind, cross-check, trip, hook, slash, high-stick or even roughing which is defined as "punching motion". It is simply put, a "push"! If a push/shove with a glove from behind is deemed to be legal in the corner of the ice it should be consistently applied in this area of the open ice as well. Besides, what referee would ever want to deny Coach Bombay and the Mighty Ducks a shot at the playoffs in this made for Hollywood play! Do you believe the player who hit Adam Banks from behind on a breakaway should have been ejected from the game? A two-minute crosschecking minor was assessed on the play. We want to know is, can a referee call a minor penalty if a goal is scored on the play? When Adam Banks was struck from behind by McGill, while on a breakaway and thrown violently into the goal post thereby sustaining an apparent serious injury, the referee erred in assessing a minor penalty for cross-checking. Aside from the fact that the Mighty Ducks goal scored on the play would have negated the assessment of a minor penalty, the very best judgment would be for the referee to impose a major penalty and game misconduct to McGill for either a check from behind (rule 43) or for cross-checking (rule 59).Rule 43 — checking from behind — a check from behind is a check delivered on a player who is not aware of the impending hit, therefore unable to protect or defend himself, and contact is made on the back part of the body. A player who cross-checks, pushes or charges from behind an opponent who is unable to defend himself, shall be assessed a major penalty. This penalty applies anywhere on the playing surface. A game misconduct penalty must be assessed anytime a major is applied for checking from behind.Rule 59 — Cross-checking — the action of using the shaft of the stick between the two hands to forcefully check an opponent. A minor or major penalty, at the discretion of the Referee based on the severity of the contact, shall be imposed on a player who "cross-checks" an opponent. When a major penalty is assessed for cross-checking, an automatic game misconduct penalty shall be imposed on the offending player. Aside from the force and location of the blow (on the back of Banks), the referee must also consider if Banks was aware of the impending hit and if he had the ability to defend himself. It is reasonable to expect that Adam Banks was incapable of either one of these conditions. While judging the illegal act on its merit the referee cant help but factor in the resulting injury. In the final assessment McGill delivered an aggressive cross-check directly from behind that caused Banks to crash into the goal post and sustain an injury. Cmon Ref would impose a 5 minute major and game misconduct to McGill for cross-checking. The goal scored by Adam Banks would obviously stand and the Hawks would have to place a player in the penalty box to serve McGills major penalty prior to its expiration (rule 20.3). No relief would be entitled the Hawks regardless how many goals the Mighty Ducks might score during the major penalty. As the Ducks debut the Flying V for the first time, the team breaks formation prior to the blue line, do you believe this play offside as the wingers enter the zone? Two players may have crossed before the puck.Upon further review the Mighty Ducks remained onside as the puck was advanced to Jessie Hall at the front of the Flying-V just prior to crossing their attacking blue line. The Flying-V moved up ice as Harry Hall of the Mighty Ducks carried the puck from a protected, safe and legal position at the back of the V. Just prior to gaining their attacking blue line, the puck was passed through the legs and onto the stick of the lead Duck in the V; #9 Jessie Hall. After gaining possession of the puck, Jessie Hall advanced the puck across the leading edge of the blue line with his stick and then pulled up to protect the puck from defenders and to allow his wingers to attack the net. Once the puck crosses the leading edge of the blue line all attacking players are eligible to enter the zone and deemed to be on-side. It is also important to note that an attacking players skates and not that of his stick are the determining factor in all instances in deciding an off-side as per rule 83. A player is off-side when both skates are completely over the leading edge of the blue line prior to the puck crossing that same leading edge. Jessie Hall got the puck across the leading edge of the attacking blue line and his teammates then entered the zone legally on-side.Further to this rule a player actually controlling the puck, who crosses the line ahead of the puck shall not be considered off-side. If the attacking player is deemed to have "possession and control" of the puck he can actually skate backwards across the blue line with the puck on his stick. (In this situation the players skates are allowed to cross the leading edge of the blue line prior to the puck!)After Charlie Conway draws a penalty shot at the end of the regulation, the ref tells coach Bombay that "any player on the ice" can take the shot. Is that correct rule? Our Hollywood scrript writer once again erred in the application of the rules when the referee informed Coach Bombay that any player on the ice was allowed to take the penalty shot after Charlie Conway was fouled from behind on a breakaway and denied a reasonable scoring opportunity. Ben Wallace Jersey. Rule 24.3 states that in cases where a penalty shot has been awarded to a player specifically fouled, that player shall be designated by the Referee to take the penalty shot. Charlie Conway was the player fouled and as such should have been identified by the referee as the player eligible to take the penalty shot. The caveat to this portion of the rule is if by reason of injury, the player designated by the referee to take the penalty shot is unable to do so within a reasonable time, the shot may be taken by a player selected by the Captain of the non-offending team from the players on the ice when the foul was committed. In all other cases where a penalty shot has been awarded, the penalty shot shall be taken by a player selected by the Captain of the non-offending team from players on the ice at the time when the foul was committed. At Joe Louis Arena on February 11, 1982 in a game between the Vancouver Canucks and the Red Wings a perfect storm developed on the ice where I was called upon to impose all of the above conditions in two penalty shots I assessed against Detroit in the final period. The following is an excerpt from my book, The Final Call, as to what took place that eventful evening in the Motor City. The Red Wings were leading 4-2 midway through the third period when Detroit defenceman Jim Schoenfeld grabbed the puck with his hand in the goal crease during a scramble around the net. I immediately blew my whistle and assessed a penalty shot to Vancouver. The shot could be taken by any Canuck player who had been on the ice at the time of the infraction. Coach Harry Neale selected Thomas Gradin, and he buried it against Detroit goalie Gilles Gilbert. The score was now 4-3 Detroit and with just over a minute to play, as Neale gave the signal to his goalie, Richard Brodeur, to come to the bench for an extra attacker in an effort to tie it up. With the Canucks net empty, Detroit turned the puck over and Stan Smyl picked up the loose puck at the Vancouver blue line and raced in the other direction on a breakaway. Detroit defenceman Reed Larson chased Smyl down from behind. Just as Smyl was about to let a shot go from 15 feet out to the left of Gilbert, Larson took a two-handed swing and chopped the Stanley Steamer down, causing the Canuck forward to slide into the goalpost and injure his leg. With just 30 seconds left in the game and Red Wings up by one goal, I blew my whistle and pointed to center ice to signal another penalty shot for the Canucks.Vancouver trainer Larry Ashley had to come out and assist Stan Smyl off the ice. The injury he had sustained on the play meant he wouldnt be able to take the shot. Once again, Harry Neale had to select one of the players who had been on the ice at the time of the infraction. Czech star Ivan Hlinka was his choice. Neale told me later that his instructions to Hlinka were very clear; "If you dont score on this penalty shot, just keep skating right out the end of the rink, all the way back to Czechoslovachia!" Needless to say Ivan Hlinka scored the tying goal with 30 seconds remaining. The moment I signaled the goal, beer cups (many of them still full) and everything else that wasnt nailed down in the arena rained down in my direction. Had I been the referee in the Mighty Ducks championship game I would have informed Coach Bombay that Charlie Conway was the player designated to take the penalty shot. That of course would only be if Conway had not been chopped down and injured on the play; which might have prevented him from taking the shot. Should that be the case, Coach Bombay could choose any other player who had been on the ice at the time of the infraction? Hopefully Bombays instructions to that player would not be as direct and harsh as Harry Neales were to Ivan Hlinka! Finally, in your experience working in the NHL and other leagues, would you say tying a goaltender to the net typically frowned upon? As a parent and grandparent I would convene a "special meeting" with the coach if I saw one of my own kids tied to a goal frame and used for target practice! After all, in these modern times even children exercise their legal rights from time to time. This type of coaching technique could quickly escalate into a lawsuit; especially in the United States. The truth of the matter is this scene in Mighty Ducks wasnt just the creative imagination of some Hollywood script writer. There is precedent on the books of goalkeepers being tied to the crossbar in practice by HHOF legend Eddie Shore as coach and owner of the Springfield Indians of the American Hockey League. Shore was known for his highly skilled but exceptionally tough play as a defenceman for the Boston Bruins from 1926-40 and won the Hart Trophy as the NHLs MVP four times. The first NHL All-Star game benefit game, played at Maple Leaf Gardens February 14, 1934 raised $20,909.40 for Toronto Maple Leaf player Ace Bailey and his family. Bailey almost died from a skull fracture following a hit from behind by Eddie Shore in a game on December 13, 1933. Following his retirement as a player Shore became perhaps even more legendary as a coach and owner of his AHL franchise in Springfield, Massachusetts. When Shores goalkeepers would not buy into the "standup" style that the coach/team owner insisted upon, a rope was tied around their neck and attached to the cross-bar in practice to keep them on their feet! He forced his defencemen to enroll in dance lessons to develop their foot movement and spoke with the players wives about abstaining from relations with their husbands the night before a game. Eddie Shore was also known as an extremely cheap owner. He often forced players that were out of the lineup to perform maintenance tasks in the arena, clean the ice surface or work menial jobs during games. When I began my officiating career in 1973 as a contracted referee with the NHL I was assigned to work games in the AHL as well as the other minor professional leagues. While Eddie Shore still owned the Springfield Indians, his son Teddy ran the day to day operations of the hockey club. Teddy was a chip off the old block; a very hands on guy. Ted ran around the arena during games doing whatever he could to keep staffing and overhead costs to a bare minimum. One game I worked in Springfield there were no beverages placed in the officials room. I bumped into Teddy as I came off the ice at the end of the first period and informed him that we didnt have any water, soda or ice in our room. Shore Jr. was extremely apologetic and said, "Kerry Ill get you and the linesmen something to drink right away." Teddy Shore hurried off and returned a few minutes later with three cups of ice and ONE can of Coke! It would have been too expensive for the owner of the Springfield Indians to provide the referee and linesmen with a drink each. (from Wikepedia) It is of little wonder to me that during the 1967 season, the entire Indians team refused to play after Shore suspended three players without pay, including future NHL star Bill White, for what he said was "indifferent play." When the team asked for an explanation, Shore suspended the two players who spoke for the team, one of whom was Brian Kilrea. Alan Eagleson, then a little-known lawyer and sometime politician, was brought in to negotiate with Shore on the players behalf. The battle escalated for months, ending with Shore giving up day-to-day operations of the club; the genesis of the National Hockey League Players Association stems from that incident. Shore continued to be owner until he sold the team in 1976.Even though Coach Bombay taught Goldberg to face his fear of being hit with the puck by tying the young goalie to the posts as the Mighty Ducks blasted away was just Eddie Shore—old school inappropriate. The Vancouver Whitecaps have sent the rights to midfielder Daigo Kobayashi to the New England Revolution for a fourth-round pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft. Kirk Mclean Jersey . The 31-year-old Kobayashi had come over to the Whitecaps from J-League side Shimizu S-Pulse. He scored three goals and added four assists in 32 appearances for the club last season. Following the season, the Whitecaps declined to pick up his 2014, but still maintained his MLS rights. Kobayashi was currently on trial with the club in preseason training. "Daigo is a good person and player but we just didnt see a spot for him on the team moving forward," said Vancouver head coach Carl Robinson in a statement. "We wish him the best of luck in New England." The Whitecaps are currently in Portland competing in the preseason Rose City Invitational tournament. Daniel Sedin Jersey . Josh Bailey had a goal and an assist as the New York Islanders earned a 2-1 win over Ottawa Wednesday, leaving the Senators five points out of a playoff spot with just five games to play and four teams ahead of them. Trevor Linden Jersey .C. -- Charles Oakley, one of the NBAs all-time tough guys, may not return to the Charlotte Bobcats bench next season because of a painful back condition he says was caused during an assault last year in Las Vegas. http://www.officialcanuckspro.com/Customized/ . Their 9-19 record remains identical to the crosstown rivals in Brooklyn and trails both Toronto and Boston in the Atlantic Division. Raymond Felton, their declining point guard, is back on the sideline nursing his third injury of the season.LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Two runs down? No sweat for these confident Los Angeles Dodgers. Adrian Gonzalez scored the go-ahead run on Yasiel Puigs sacrifice fly that capped a three-run sixth inning, helping the Dodgers beat the New York Mets 4-2 on Monday night for their sixth straight victory. The deficit was small compared to Friday, when the Dodgers rallied from six runs down to beat Tampa Bay on a walkoff. "Its a special group. Hopefully, special things can happen," said Nick Punto, who homered in the seventh. "We have a lot of talent on this team and things are clicking." The Dodgers improved to 38-8 since June 22, the franchises best 46-game stretch in the modern era that began in 1900. The 1899 Brooklyn Superbas had 38 wins in several 46-game stretches between April and June of that year. Overall, its the best 46-game run for a major league team since the 2001 Oakland Athletics went 38-8 between Aug. 2 and Sept. 27. "The confidence is really high," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "Our pitching has been great." Gonzalez went 3 for 4 and drove in a run for the seventh straight game, the longest RBI streak since Adrian Beltres eight-game run from July 17-24, 2004. Ricky Nolasco (9-9) extended his winning streak to three. The right-hander allowed two runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out two and walked two, retiring 11 consecutive batters during one stretch. "I made a lot of good pitches," he said. "A lot of their hits were well-placed." Mets catcher John Buck played with Nolasco in Miami. "He never gives up and never gives in to hitters," he said. "He executes pitches when he needs to, and keeps the team in the ballgame, and thats the thing I remember from him when I was there." Kenley Jansen got the final four outs to earn his 18th save in 21 chances. He has retired 32 of the last 33 batters he has faced with 18 strikeouts since July 23. Jenrry Mejia (1-2) gave up three runs — two earned — and six hits in six innings as the Mets two-game winning streak ended. The right-hander struck out four and walked none. He retired his first eight batters. New York had won five of six. Ahead 2-0, Mejia alllowed three straight singles to open the sixth, capped by Gonzalezs RBI single over the head of leaping shortstop Omar Quintanilla. Markus Granlund Jersey. "We actually tried to go down and away to him, and I think it just rode up and in a little bit on him and missed the spot," Buck said. "It was one of those things where he just jammed him in the right spot." Center fielder Juan Lagares scooped up the ball and fired it to third, but it went off the glove of Wilmer Flores and into the Dodgers dugout as Gonzalez took third. That allowed Mark Ellis to score from first behind Carl Crawford, tying the game 2-2. Puig followed with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Gonzalez, making it 3-2. Punto homered for just the second time this season, extending the Dodgers lead to 4-2 in the seventh. Danny DeVito came on the field after the game wearing Puntos No. 7 jersey. "I didnt get it back, either," said Punto, who met the actor for the first time. "Ive never seen someone so excited. He said, It felt amazing for me. It must have felt good for you." New York had the tying runs on first and second in the eighth with two outs. Jansen came in and retired pinch-hitter Justin Turner on a called third strike. The Dodgers got out of a jam in the seventh, when the Mets had runners on first and second with two outs. Daniel Murphy lined out to right, and Puig caught the ball over his shoulder while running toward the wall. "Theyve been amazing," Nolasco said about the bullpen. "To get out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh was great." The Mets led 2-0 in the second on RBI singles by Buck and Quintanilla after Nolasco gave up four consecutive singles to open the inning. Quintanillas 17 RBI set a single-season career high. Notes: Jansen had his second four-out save of the season, with the other coming at Colorado on July 3. ... The Dodgers six-game winning streak ties their season high for the third time. ... Nolasco has faced the Mets more than any other team in his career, with 26 games and 24 starts, and 139 2/3 innings pitched against them. ... Westbrook totaled 35 points, 11 assists, five rebounds and five steals for the Thunder, who were without the reigning MVP Durant for a fifth straight game. Durant sprained his right ankle late in the first half of a loss to Golden State on Dec. 18. Westbrook scored 20 in the second half, helping Oklahoma City hold off a pair of Spurs rallies. Serge Ibaka added 21 points and Steven Adams donated 16 points and a career-high 15 boards. The Thunder were plus-27 with Westbrook and Adams on the floor. Tony Parkers drive and dish to Tim Duncan for a dunk at 6:48 of the fourth gave the Spurs a 93-89 lead. The rest of the game belonged to Westbrook. His layup less than a minute after Duncans slam tied the game, and his feed to Adams for a thunderous dunk gave Oklahoma City the lead. Westbrook then took it from Cory Joseph and went coast-to-coast for a layup. Out of a Spurs timeout, Westbrook hit a pull-up jumper and assisted on Anthony Morrows 3-ball that made it 102-93. After the Spurs scored the next five points, Westbrook attracted enough attention on a drive that Morrow, one of the leagues top snipers, was left wide open for another 3-pointer. Reggie Jackson hit a long two while Adams and Morrow both made two free throws in the final minute to seal the game. Seven Spurs reached double figures, with Matt Bonners 17 points leading the balanced attack. Duncan scored 15, Joseph and Splitter had 14 apiece and Manu Ginobili tallied 11 with a game-high 13 assists. Robin Yount Jersey. They were more physical than us. They got a lot of offensive rebounds, loose balls and we turned the ball over a lot, Ginobili said. The Thunder made their first six shots from the floor and led 17-8 before Duncans three-point play woke up San Antonios offense. Bonner came off the bench and hit a pair of 3s, Ginobili had seven assists in seven minutes and the Spurs went up by two before four straight at the end of the quarter gave the Thunder a 29-27 edge. OKC led 50-47 at halftime. The Spurs were within one three times early in the third before a pair of Adams free throws sparked a 9-0 run. Westbrooks three-point play ended the flurry and made it 63-53. The lead reached 11 before San Antonio mounted a comeback. Tiago Splitter bookended a 13-2 run with layups, including a reverse on a feed from Ginobili with a second to play in the quarter. Joseph scored five points on the run, which gave the Spurs a 77-76 lead heading into the fourth. Game Notes The Spurs beat the Thunder 4-2 in the Western Conference finals last season ... This was Oklahoma Citys first win over a team with a record better than .500 this season (1-5) ... San Antonio was without Kawhi Leonard (hand) for the fifth straight game ... ATLANTA - Coming off an opening night win at home, the Raptors take to the road, visiting the Atlanta Hawks in the first half of a weekend back-to-back set on Friday. Johnathan Abram Jersey . The Raptors, who went 13-28 on the road a year ago, will play their first game away from the Air Canada Centre this season. Theyll play six of their next eight contests, and 19 of 33 outside of Toronto. "When you play on the road [for] so many games, you have a lot of adversity you have to fight through," said guard DeMar DeRozan, who struggled in the teams 93-87 win over Boston on Wednesday, scoring 13 points on 6-of-19 shooting. "That cant do anything but be beneficial for us, especially early on," he continued. "If we get through this little tough stretch, well be fine. Me personally, I think its a great test for us. Itll help us find our character early on." Toronto hopes to start the campaign on a winning streak, picking up where they left off when they closed last season with five consecutive victories. The Hawks return to Atlanta for their home opener after allowing the Mavericks to shoot 57 per cent in a 118-109 loss on Wednesday. "I think this team is a very offensive-minded team, a very good offensive team," Raptors head coach Dwane Casey said of the Hawks, who shot 49 per cent in Dallas opening night. "The biggest change is now you have [Paul] Millsap, whos a very consistent pick and pop guy. Youve got two bigs (Millsap and Al Horford) who are not youre traditional low-post guys. Its a very versatile offensive team from that perspective." "Theyre one of the teams thats going to be knocking on that door for those last couple spots in the playoffs." After losing Josh Smith to free agency during the summer, Atlanta is turning the page with Millsap - the former Jazz forward, signed to a two-year $19 million deal in the offseason - and new head coach Mike Budenholzer. A first-year head coach, Budenholzer comes to Atlanta after 19 seasons as an assistant under Gregg Popovich in San Antonio. "Hes running the same things they ran in San Antonio," Casey said of the Hawks new coach. "Hes going to do a good job because hes taken a lot of San Antonios system there to Atlanta." Trends and Tidbits Last season, the Raptors were one of four teams in the NBA - along with the Bulls, Grizzlies and Suns - to average more points and shoot a higher field goal percentage on the road than at home. However, they gave up 102.4 points per game as a visiting team, 7.4 points more than they allowed at home. Fridays game is the first half of a weekend back-to-back which concludes in Milwaukee on Saturday, the teams first of 18 back-to-backs this season. Last year, Toronto had a 6-12 record in the first game of a back-to-back and 8-10 in the second game. Kyle Korvers current streak of 74 consecutive games with at least one made three-pointer is the fourth longest in NBA history behind only Dana Barros (89), Michael Adams (79) and Dennis Scott (78). Korver is shooting 46 per cent from long distance during that run and ranks sixth among active players in career three-point field goal percentage (.419). Raptors forward Steve Novak ranks second (.433). What to Watch For Battle on the boards Finishing strong defensive possessions off with a rebound was a focus for Caseys club throughout camp. Not only did they control the defensive boards in Wednesdays home opener but they dominated the offensive glass, creating extra possessions that became crucial in grinding out an ugly win. Toronto outrebounded Boston 48-33, including a 19-7 advantage on the offensive boards. Although the Celtics were more efficient, shooting 49 per cent (another area of emphasis for Casey), the Raptors attempted 20 more shots and scored 28 second-chance points. Atlantas front line is a small one, with the undersized Millsap and Horford in the middle. The Hawks were bested on the boards 42-33 on Wednesday, grabbing just five offensive rebounds. Moving the ball The Raptors managed just 15 assists to 18 turnovers on 38 field goals on Wednesday, registering just two dimes in the final quarter when the team relied heavily on isolation sets. Casey said DeRozan, and the team in general, have to do a better job of adjusting to regular season defences and passing out of double teams. "I think a lot of it is getting used to the regular season basketball," Casey said. "I think everybody has to get used to that. Its a different mentality, a different toughness. We have to adapt to it." "Teams are more aggressive, theyre more fired up." Who to Watch For Kyle Lowry Lowry, playing with a splint on his injured left ring finger, struggled with his shot in the first game, shooting just 2-of-8 from the field and 7-for-12 at the line. The Raptors point guard chalked it up to an off-night and refused to blame the injury. Although he had eight assists in the opener, hell have to be more efficient offensively and will also be tasked with slowing down Hawks point guard Jeff Teague, one of the quicker players in the NBA. Paul Millsap Coming over from Utah, Millsap scored 20 points in his Hawks debut. As Casey alluded to, Millsap is a versatile big man who can play either forward position and stretch the floor with his mid-range shooting. "Hes a silent killer," Casey said of Millsap. "Hes just a solid, old-school, hardworking guy that were really going to have to be concerned about." Amir Johnson and Tyler Hansbrough will share the responsibility of keeping Millsap contained on the pick and pop. "Hes a hell of a player," Lowry said of Millsap, both members of the 2006 draft class. "Hes an all-star calibre player. Hes tough, Im a big fan of his, Ive always been a big fan of his since his rookie year. Hes going to be a beast in the East." Injury Report Guard Lou Williams (right knee) and centre Gustavo Ayon (right shoulder) are both out for the Hawks. Chris Heisey connected for his first grand slam and Devin Mesoraco homered and drove in a career high-tying four runs as Cincinnati took advantage of Tampa Bays depleted pitching staff for a 12-4 victory on Sunday.Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the signing of catcher Jordan Guida and right-handed pitcher Christian Garcia to contracts for the 2014 season. Guida, 25, saw limited action in 42 games with the Goldeyes last season. He hit .184 in 38 at-bats and registered an RBI. He didnt register enough at-bats to accumulate a year of service, so he remains a first-year rookie in the American Association. “Hes a really good rookie,” Forney said. “Unfortunately the way our roster evolved last year, we didnt get him nearly enough playing time as I would have liked. He has the ability to be a really good catcher. He has good hands, a really strong throwing arm, good feet behind the plate and really does a good job of calling games. Offensively, I think he has a lot of pop and some extra-base hit potential. We look forward to see him in camp again this year.” Guida was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Detroit Tigers in 2012 and played the second half of that season in their system. Garcia, 22, played most of lasst season in the Houston Astros organization at the Rookie level with Greeneville of the Appalachian League. John Matuszak Jersey. He went 2-1 with a 5.85 ERA in 16 appearances with Greeneville and had two scoreless appearances with Class A Short Season Tri-City of the New York/Penn League. “He came highly recommended from an agent,” Forney said. “He has a powerful arm, anywhere from 91-94 MPH. Were looking for some younger guys to help fill out our pitching staff. Were hopeful he can come in and solidify a spot on the team. He can start and relieve. Well get a good look at him in training camp and determine where he fits best on our roster.” A 29th round selection by the Astros in the 2012 MLB amateur draft, Garcia played the last two seasons in their system at the Rookie and Class A Short Season levels. California Chrome is the 3-5 morning line favorite to become the 12th Triple Crown winner in racing history. Chad Henne Jersey . However, the last seven odds-on Belmont Stakes favorites have failed to win and complete the magnificent feat. You can watch the Belmont Stakes on TSN this Saturday, with coverage beginning at 2:30pm et/11:30am pt. One has to go all the way back to 1978 when Affirmed held off Alydar at 3-5 to find the last odds-on betting choice to grab hold of the final leg of horse racings Triple Crown. In fact, Affirmed was the fourth straight odds-on winner following the footsteps of Seattle Slew (2-5), Bold Forbes (4-5) and Secretariat (1-9). Between the years 1958 and 1971, only one of eight odds-on betting favorites in the Belmont came home on top - Damascus (4-5) in 1967. Finally, half of the first 14 odds-on choices crossed the wire first. Overall, this type of favorite holds just 12 victories in 33 overall starts. It must be mentioned that there were two odds-on choices in 1957. Gallant Man (19-20) crossed the wire first while Bold Ruler (17-20) finished third. The bottom line is there have been only 12 winners out of 32 races since mutuels began in New York in 1940. Thats a 37.5 percent winning percentage. Moreover, of the 19 horses in line for the Triple Crown sweep, just six came home victorious. That amounts to a 33 percent winning percentage. Five of the Kentucky Derby-Preakness winners ran second in the Belmont Stakes with Real Quiet (4-5 in 1998) coming the closest, losing by a nose to Victory Gallop. The four others were Pensive (1-2 in 1944), Tim Tam (3-20 in 1958), Sunday Silence (4-5 in 1989) and Smarty Jones (2-5 in 2004). Three more finished third - Northern Dancer (4-5 in 1964), Spectacular Bid (1-5 in 1979) and Pleasant Colony (4-5 in 1981). Five finished off the board, including Big Brown (2008) - the last horse vying for the Triple Crown that ran in the Belmont (Ill Have Another in 2012 was injured and did not race in the final leg). There also is another key factor that plays against California Chrome and that is field size. The six Triple Crown winners between 1941 and 1978 won the Belmont Stakes against a combined 27 other horses, which amounts to an average of 3.5 horses per race. The 13 horses that failed to win the Triple Crown had 110 challengers, which means those colts ran against an average of 8.5 horses per race. This year, the Belmont Stakes has a field of 11, which ties for the second- most entrants behind the 1971 edition when Canonero II finished fourth at 3-5. The 1966, 1981 and 1998 renewals also had 10 other horses competing against odds-on Derby-Preakness winners Kauai King, Pleasant Colony and Real Quiet, respectively. All three of those horses lost the Belmont Stakes. California Chrome is by far the most talented member of this 3-year-old crop. He owns tremendous tactical speed, which should place him on or just off the early lead. Only Samraat and Tonalist, and to a less extent, General a Rod, have decent gate speed, so jockey Victor Espinoza will not have much of a crowd in front of him. We will see if the colt is good enough to overcome what so many have failed to accomplish over the last 36 years. THE PRETENDERS There are two horses that have no business being in the race - Matterhorn and Matuszak. The former has not won since last November while the latter hasnt won since September. Three other colts have better bodies of work than that pair but should still finish off the board. They are General a Rod, Commissioner and Samraat. General a Rod has the pedigree to be successful at the 1 1/2-mile distance, but he sure does not run like it. It is true he had a terrible trip in the Preakness, but dont look for any improvement from a horse that might not have been entered in the Belmont if his stablemate, Intense Holiday, did not come down with an injury. Commissioner showed more speed in the Peter Pan than he ever had before, but that may have occurred due to the sloppy Belmont surface that day. An argument could be made that a horse not expected to vie for the early lead could jump up and do so and this colt might be the one. Either on the pace or off, dont expect the Todd Pletcher-trained 3-year-old to be around when the true running begins. Samraat ran a very good fifth in the Kentucky Derby - his second straight loss after opening with five wins in his first five outings. His breeding does not suggest he will appreciate the added distance, so it is best to side with others. INTRIGUING POSSIBILITIES Commanding Curve comes into the Belmont Stakes off a second-place finish to California Chrome in the Kentucky Derby. He is one of four horses in the field to have run in the Derby and pass the Preakness. Commanding Curve also had the easiest of trips in the first leg of the Triple Crown, unlike a few others entered in the Belmont. The son of Master Command has been training well and certainly is a horse to use in the exotics. However, he is doubtful to cross the wire first. Ride On Curlin represents the closest finisher to California Chrome considering the latter has strung together six consecutive victories. Nevertheless, the Belmont Stakes will be Ride On Curlins fourth race in the last eight weeks and that might be too much, especially on the heels of a 1 1/2-mile event. THE FINAL FOUR Filling out the final spot in the superfecta will be Tonalist. The Peter Pan winner has done nothing wrong as a 3-year-old, winning two of three starts with a second to Florida Derby winner Constitution in his only other race - an allowance event on a speed-favoring Gulfstream Park track. Three main reasons why he wont hit the board are: 1. his lack of experience (four career races), 2. he will be on the pace and will use too much energy trying to square off with California Chrome, and 3. breaking from the No. 11 post position will make for a longer trip into the first turn. Medal Count ran a very good eighth in the Kentucky Derby considering Danza cut him off approaching the eighth-pole. His momentum was completely stopped and he still finished less than two lengths from finishing fourth. The Dale Romans-trained son of Dynaformer not only should love the 12 furlongs, but he also has been working well at Churchill Downs. Finally, he has had five weeks off after racing three times in a month. That leaves California Chrome and Wicked Strong as the two most probable winners. Not surprisingly, they are the top two choices on the morning line. Wicked Strong has been working out on the Belmont training track, but he is one of only three horses in the field with a win over the main track (Samraat and Tonalist are the other two). The fourth-place Derby finisher broke poorly from the far outside post position on the first Saturday in May and was caught very wide going into the first turn. He eventually closed from 14th to a fourth-place finish at the wire. A better trip is expected on Saturday. Its been 36 years since Affirmed last won the last Triple Crown. Among the horses that have failed have been speed types (Smarty Jones, War Emblem and Sunday Silence), stalkers (Big Brown, Funny Cide, Silver Charm and Spectacular Bid), middle movers (Real Quiet and Charismatic) and closers (Pleasant Colony and Alysheba). California Chrome falls into the first category. If the pace is slow, he might be on the lead. If not, look for him to sit a couple lengths off, as he did in the first two Triple Crown races. A victory on Saturday will put to rest all the talk of having to alter either the distances or the span of time in between the three races. A loss and the discussions will ignite once again. Will he win? That is the million dollar question. Is he a good bet to cross the wire first at odds-on? History says no. THE BELMONT WAGER This will be a winning season regardless of what happens since the $50 wager on the California Chrome-Ride On Curlin exacta came through for a cool $455 return. With a mythical $100 Belmont Stakes wager, bet $35 on a Wicked Strong- California Chrome exacta and $30 the other way. In addition, bet $15 on a California Chrome-Medal Count exacta and $10 the other way. And just in case the favorite fails to fire, use Wicked Strong and Medal Count in a $5 exacta box. The five-time CFL all-star and three-time winner of the leagues outstanding player award left as pro footballs all-time leading passer with 79,816 passing yards and holds the leagues all-time marks for touchdowns (455), completions (5,892) and attempts (9,437). "Having my No. 13 retired alongside the teams greatest legends like Sam Etchevery, Peter Dalla Riva and my former teammate Mike Pringle at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium is an incredible privilege," Calvillo said in a statement. &qquot;I consider myself very fortunate to have been surrounded by so many talented individuals throughout my career. Sammy Watkins Jersey. "Without the contributions from (GM) Jim Popp, those exceptional coaches and my great teammates, none of this would have been possible." Calvillo began his CFL career in 94 with the expansion Las Vegas Posse and joined the Alouettes in 98 following three seasons with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Santa Clara, CA - Erick Torres notched his 11th goal of the season on Wednesday and it was enough to lead Chivas USA to a 1-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes at Buck Shaw Stadium. Jan Vertonghen Belgium Jersey . Torres struck in the 53rd minute after San Jose was unable to clear a cross Mauro Rosales, while Dan Kennedy and the Chivas defense made the goal hold up to give the Goats seven points from their last three matches. San Jose, meanwhile, has now lost three straight games by a 1-0 score, and the team will be happy to get forward Chris Wondolowski back from World Cup duty as soon as possible. Yannick Djalo was the most dangerous man on the field for either side in the first half as he forced Kennedy into a decent save after 15 minutes before narrowly missing the near post with a well-struck volley shortly before the break. Chivas didnt muster a lot in the attacking third in the first half, but the breakthrough came in the 53rd when Torres pounced on a clearance attempt from a Rosales cross to beat goalkeeper Jon Busch. San Jose had chances to equalize over the final 10 minutes, yet Kennedy denied a good header from Ty Harden before surviving close calls from Djalo and Jean- Baptiste Pierazzi, whose rebound attempt on a scramble in front of goal was blocked by the Chivas defense. Marco Delgado wasted an opportunity to put the match away in the closing minutes for Chivas after being set up by Leandro Barrera as he fired the ball over an open net, although the mistake didnt prove costly. Romelu Lukaku Jersey . The Bulls seem to be getting along fine without him. D.J. Augustin scored 27 points in a start for Kirk Hinrich and Taj Gibson matched a career high with 26 filling in for Carlos Boozer as the Bulls improved to 7-2 since trading the popular Deng with a 98-87 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night. Simon Mignolet Jersey . However, it wasnt a problem on Monday night. Evgeni Nabokov made 23 saves for his 56th career shutout in the New York Islanders 3-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night. http://www.soccerbelgiumfansshop.com/Blank-UEFA-European-Belgium-Jersey/ . Ending a nine-game losing streak? That gave the Milwaukee Bucks veteran forward a reason to smile.TORONTO -- They called it a serious mistake that Jonas Valanciunas must learn from. But otherwise the Toronto Raptors players and staff are standing behind their starting centre after he was charged with drunk driving. The 21-year-old apologized to his teammates, and will play in Wednesdays game against the visiting Philadelphia 76ers, but news of his arrest drew a large contingent of media to practice on Tuesday and negative attention to a team bound for the playoffs for the first time in six seasons. "(I was) disappointed a little bit," Raptors GM Masai Ujiri said of his reaction to the arrest. "As an organization, its not something we take lightly, its not something I feel we are just going to brush aside. (But) hes a young kid ... I look at all of you here and I wonder what we were all doing when we were 21, so there are mistakes that are made." Valanciunas was arrested early Monday morning in Wasaga Beach, Ont., a popular vacation destination for college students about 100 kilometres north of downtown Toronto, and charged with having more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. Police say they began investigating after a report that a vehicle went through a drive-thru with open beer bottles visible. The Lithuanian met with Ujiri for an hour on Monday, and had his "face in his hands," the GM said. He also met with Tim Leiweke, the president and CEO of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. "I think he feels he let his teammates down, he let his fans down, the organization," Ujiri said. "Thats Jonas, hes a great kid. And I think he made some kind of a mistake, but I think the most important thing is its not going to happen again, and he understands that." Ujiri spoke to a media horde of more than 40-strong. There were nine television cameras. Valanciunas was not made available to reporters after what coach Dwane Casey said was a great practice by the sophomore centre, but issued a statement with an apology on Monday. "I hold myself to a high standard and take my role as a member of the Toronto Raptors very seriously," Valanciunas said. "I apologize to the organization, my teammates, my family and my fans, and regret any negativity this incident has brought upon them." Valanciunass first court appearance is scheduled for Collingwood, Ont., on April 22, which is a couple of days after the start of the playoffs. Valanciunas does not have to attend and so a lawyer will stand in for him. He still may face a suspension of a couple of games by the NBA, but that wouldnt come until the results of his trial which would likely be during the summer. The Raptors will decide on any further punishment such as a fine or suspension following the leagues ruling. Most of the Raptors and their families attended the Toronto Blue Jays game on a day off from practice Sunday. Ujiri said Valanciunas instead went to Wasaga Beach with his wife and some friends. Thhe seven-footer is averaging 11 points and 8. Leander Dendoncker Belgium Jersey. rebounds a game, and his growth this season is a big part of why the Raptors are in third in the Eastern Conference and poised to win the Atlantic Division title. Casey spoke of Valanciunas much like he would a son. "Like I told him, Im upset with him and disappointed, but hes mine so we love him," Casey said. "He made a mistake, but like any other young man has probably done before, or had the opportunity before. We dont condone it, the organization doesnt condone it, and its a tough time of year to do it. But its happened. ... "We all make mistakes, its what we do after it that is how were going to be judged." Kyle Lowry said the young teammate that he views as a little brother was "sick right now" over the mistake. "Hes really hurt by it, hes really embarrassed by it, very disappointed in himself. I can tell you that for sure," the veteran point guard said. "Its just a mistake that he made, its unfortunate that it happened to such a good kid in JV, but it happened, hes 21, hes going to learn from it. Im sure hell never make that mistake again," he added. Lowry said his advice was: "Just be more responsible. We have all the benefits of having drivers and taxis. Thats it, be more responsible." Raptors all-star DeMar DeRozan said the incident was a regrettable mistake, but added the players support for each other in any situation is part of what has made Toronto one of the best teams in the East this season. "At the end of the day, were all human. We can look at everybody in here and ask them: have they done something wrong, or made a mistake in life. Its part of life. Its something you learn from and grow from." "No matter what guys go through, were always there for them, family, whatever it may be, somebodys kid is sick ... its always something, and were always there for one another. Thats big because you dont get that with every team that you play for." The Raptors said the negative news wont be a distraction to the team that has won six of its last seven games. "Not at all," Lowry said. "We had a great practice today, really spirited, really competitive, really positive vibe in there." "Ive been coaching since 79 and Ive seen a little bit of everything," Casey added. "This is very serious, a very serious matter, but its not enough to distract the team and that type of thing. "His teammates were very supportive of him, and to them its a great lesson also, the focus and the discipline you have to have in your own life to go forward." The last Raptor to be charged with drunk driving while still a member of the team was Dee Brown, who was stopped by police in 1999 in Toronto and charged with impaired driving and later convicted. But a judge found he was a victim of racial profiling and overturned the conviction. KANSAS CITY, Kan. Jean Beliveau Jersey . -- Graham Zusi and Jozy Altidore scored second-half goals to give the United States a 2-0 victory over Jamaica on Friday night and clinch first place for the Americans in their World Cup qualifying group for the third straight cycle. The sides had played to a stalemate through the first 77 minutes before Alejandro Bedoya got the ball on the wing. He crossed to Zusi, whose shot from about 12 yards beat goalkeeper DuWayne Kerr and ignited his home-team crowd of 18,467 decked out in red, white and blue. Fans packed into Sporting Park had barely settled back down before Edgar Castillo, like Zusi a second-half substitute, found Altidore in front of an open net for another goal in the 81st minute. Altidore scored for his sixth straight international start. The U.S. (6-2-1), which clinched its seventh straight World Cup berth last month, has 19 points in North and Central American and Caribbean qualifying and a four-point lead over second-place Costa Rica (4-2-3), which lost 1-0 at third-place Honduras (4-3-2). Jamaica (0-5-4), whose only World Cup appearance was in 1998, was eliminated. Zusi, who stars for Sporting KC, had entered at the start of the second half for Landon Donovan and was cheered wildly by his home fans. He returned the passion after he scored his second international goal, pumping his fist and celebrating with his teammates. Altidore extended his own team record by scoring in his sixth straight games. The goal was his eighth of the year and his fourth in World Cup qualifiers. It was another bitter defeat to the U.S. for Jamaica, which lost 2-1 on June 7 in Kingston when Brad Evans scored in second-half stoppage time. The Reggae Boyz fell to 1-13-8 against the U.S., including 1-5-6 in qualifiers. Still alive at the onset -- at least mathematically -- Jamaica pressed the attack in the opening minutes, dominating possession and pestering goalkeeper Tim Howard. Demar Phillips sent a free kick toward the goal that Howard got his mitts on, and Evans managed to clear it just before Darren Mattocks could get his foot on it in front of an open goal. Jamaica had precious few decent scoring looks the rest of the night. The U.S. won despite missing several key players due to injuries. Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey and Fabian Johnson were unavailable, Omar Gonzalez sustained a hip strain just before he was due to join the national team, and forward Eddie Johnson strained his left groin in training Wednesday. That gave coach Jurgen Klinsmann a chance to give several younger players a look, including Aron Johannsson, who played for Icelands under-21 team and made his U.S. debut in August. Evans was back after missing the Mexico match with a strained calf muscle, and Altidore, Matt Besler and Geoff Cameron were back after serving suspensions for yellow-card accumulation. NOTES: The U.S. finished 8-0 in home qualifiers this cycle, outscoring opponents 8-0 on American soil in the hexagonal. The Americans are 25-0-2 in home qualifiers since a 2001 loss to Honduras. FOXBOROUGH, Mass. Jack Youngblood Jersey . - The last time Tom Brady faced the Baltimore Ravens in the playoffs, he threw interceptions on the New England Patriots final two drives. In their three playoff matchups, he lost twice. All those games were at Gillette Stadium, where the post-season rivals meet Saturday for the fourth time in six years.Brady says none of that history will matter when he takes his first snap in the divisional playoff on the path to what he hopes will be his fourth straight AFC title game.I dont think thats really useful, the quarterback said Tuesday. We cant change what has happened. You just have to move forward and you have to think about the things that weve done really well this year. That would be:Going 12-4 and earning the top seed in the AFC. Scoring the fourth most points in the NFL. Having a strong defence with outstanding cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner. Leadership from a quarterback with the fifth best passer rating. And production from a tight end, Rob Gronkowski, with the most receptions for anyone at his position and excellent blocking ability.Weve put ourselves in a good position, Brady said after returning to practice following a first-round bye. Weve just got to take advantage of it.They didnt do that in two of their three playoff games against the Ravens.Their post-season rivalry began with Baltimores 33-14 wild-card win in the 2009 season. Two years later, New England won 23-20 to advance to the Super Bowl, where it lost to the New York Giants. In Bradys second consecutive AFC championship matchup with the Ravens on Jan. 20, 2013, the Patriots lost 28-13 after leading 13-7 at halftime. Those three games were hardly Bradys best: a total of three touchdown passes, seven interceptions and a 56.1 completion percentage. The Patriots did rout the Ravens in Baltimore last season 41-7, but Brady didnt have to do much. They led 17-0 early in the second quarter, LeGarrette Blount ran for two touchdowns and the defence produced four turnovers and four sacks. Those three playoff games might make for some pretty ugly viewing, but watching film of them might provide useful tips. Its the same (defensive) co-ordinator so a lot of the scheme stuff you see how he (Dean Pees) tried to defend us back then, Brady said. Were a different team now, too, so I think the more information the better.Theyre a different team.Fiery linebacker Terrell Suggs is still around for the Ravens (11-6) and had an interception in last Saturdays 30-17 wild-card win over Pittsburgh. And hes no fan of Bradys, having criticized him for complaining to officials. But four days before their most important game of the season, both downplayed any differences.Hes phenomenal, Brady said. Weve never really talked a lot on the field. Weve never really talked much off the field either. So, its the way it goes, but hes a great player.Suggs had a simple explanation for how he views Brady.Hes a quarterback. Im a defender. Hes got a job to do and so do I, so naturally there are going to be some disagreements there, he said Tuesday. Nobodys really worried about what happened in the past. The only thing were worrying about is this game. The Ravens were second in the NFL with 49 sacks, led by Elvis Dumervil with 17 and Suggs with 12.But theyre 24th in pass defence and tied for 25th with 11 interceptionsThe Patriots offensive line should be back intact after left guard Dan Connolly missed the last two games with a knee injury. Its a lot of pressure on us to do a good job, Connolly said. Its our job to make sure Tom stays upright. In beating the Steelers, the Ravens sacked Pittsburghs Ben Roethslisberger five timesThe Patriots got back to work on Tuesday, working out in pads on a chilly day after five days without practice. Its been great for everybody to get your body a chance to take a little break and heal up a little bit, Brady said. This is a first step for us. A lot of teams played last week. We didnt get a chance to do that. His next chance to beat the Ravens is just a few days away.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Wholesale Rams Jerseys . NASHVILLE -- Tennessee Titans coach Ken Whisenhunts defensive staff has a Cleveland Browns flavour. Whisenhunt continued putting together his staff Monday by announcing the hiring of defensive co-ordinator Ray Horton and defensive backs coach Louie Cioffi, who each filled the same roles this season in Cleveland. The Browns fired head coach Rob Chudzinski after the season. During the 2011 and 2012 seasons, Horton was defensive co-ordinator and Cioffi was defensive backs coach in Arizona while Whisenhunt was the Cardinals head coach. "I am excited about this opportunity, to be reunited with Coach Whisenhunt and to be a piece of the puzzle to move this team forward," Horton said Monday in a release announcing the move. The Browns allowed the third-fewest yards per pass attempt of any NFL team this season. The Browns ranked ninth in the NFL in total defence, up from 23rd a year earlier. "Scheme-wise, one of the most impressive things about Ray is his flexibility," Whisenhunt said in a team release. "He has the ability to go between a 4-3 and 3-4 and put our players in the best position to succeed. It has been evident by what he done and where his defences have ranked in the league ovver the last few years. Taylor Rapp Jersey. ." Horton worked on the Pittsburgh Steelers coaching staff from 2004-10. He also was a secondary coach for two seasons with the Detroit Lions and five seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. He began his coaching career as a defensive assistant for the Washington Redskins from 1994-96. Horton also had a 10-year playing career as a safety with the Cincinnati Bengals (1983-88) and Dallas Cowboys (1989-92). During Cioffis one season in Cleveland, Browns cornerback Joe Haden earned his first Pro Bowl selection and picked off four passes. Cioffi also helped the Cardinals lead the NFL in passer rating allowed and rank second in the league with 22 interceptions in 2012. Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson had seven interceptions in 2012 to earn his first Pro Bowl selection. Cioffi also was a staff assistant with the New York Jets in 1993-94 and coached with the Cincinnati Bengals from 1997-2010. TORONTO -- Rookie right-hander Marcus Stroman continues to sparkle for the Blue Jays. Kenyan Drake Jersey . The 23-year-old blanked Texas for seven innings and Dan Johnson drove home two runs as Toronto held on to defeat the lowly Rangers 4-1 Saturday afternoon. Stroman has held opposing teams to three earned runs or less in eight of his nine career starts. And he bounced back from that lone subpar outing -- when he gave up six runs in 3 2/3 innings last time out -- with a gritty outing that got better as the day wore on. The five-foot-nine 185-pounder has blanked two of his last three opponents. "Since hes been here, hes been really good -- especially for a young kid," said Toronto manager John Gibbons. "You guys all know the arms there. But hes a lot more polished than I thought he was going to be. And he has a way of dialling it up at crunch time. "He got into a little jam there (in the fourth inning), got a couple of big punchouts after it was first and second no outs. Thats what hes capable of. ... Hes just a great competitor with a great arm. He pitches to win. Hes not worried about anything else but winning a game and it shows." After spending time in the bullpen, Stroman has gone 4-2 as a starter with a 2.50 ERA. The 2010 first-round pick kept the Rangers to four hits during his stint, striking out five with no walks while throwing 107 pitches including 70 strikes. After giving up back-to-back singles to open the fourth inning, he retired 12 straight with four strikeouts. "That definitely pumped me up going into the next inning ... That was huge," Stroman said of the fourth-inning escape. "Definitely a momentum shift." Stroman said it was all about raising ones intensity. "I feel like Im really able to get in the zone when I need to, and really focus and make big pitches on crucial counts. That was one of those moments and it was big. It was big for the team, it was big for us to kind of get us going." Toronto, which outhit Texas 12-6, survived the bases loaded with two outs in the eighth inning thanks to a Dustin McGowan strikeout -- his third of the inning -- of Jake Smolinski. "It got a little hairy there at the end," Gibbons acknowledged. Left-hander Aaron Loup, rather than right-handed closer Casey Janssen who was laid low by either food poisoning or a bug, pitched the ninth for his third save. An opening walk was negated by J.P. Arencibia hitting into a double play before Rougned Odor flied out. After dropping the series opener 5-1, Toronto (50-48) came into the game having lost three straight and nine of its last 11. "We desperately needed that today," Gibbons said of the win. Despite snapping an eight-game losing streak with Fridays win, the numbers were still ugly for injury-plagued Texas. The Rangers (39-58) came into Saturdays contest 2-12 in July and had lost 14 of 16 and 22 of 26. Texas winning percentage of .406 was worst in the majors. Misfiring at the plate in recent days, the Jays looked to find runs any way they could before a sellout crowd of 45,802 under the roof at Rogers Centre thanks to rain. Centre-fielder Colby Rasmus showed that in the fifth when, facing a shift, he bunted down the empty third-base line to get on base. That led to some jawing with Texas starter Colby Lewis. "Everybody saw it," Lewis said. "Youre up by two runs with two outs and lay down a bunt. I dont think thats the way the game should be played. I let him know and that was about it. "I just told him I didnt appreciate it," he added, accusing Rasmus of "looking out for batting average." The Jays saw it more as scratching out offence. "Sometimes youve got to force some things," said Gibbons. Toronto, outscored 18-4 in their three previous losses, looked to steal bases, sacrifice and take advantage of any fielding hesitation by the Rangers to get on base and advance runners. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didnt but the home side scratched out enough offence to win. Stroman and Lewis were both coming off rough starts, coincidentally on consecutive days against the Angels. Lewis coughed up 13 runs in 2 1/3 innings, raising his ERA to 6.54 from 5.51. Lewis (6-7) pitched five innings, giving up two runs on eight hits. He struck out five and walked three. Both teams feature patchwork rosters due to the injury bug, with seven active catchers between them. The Rangers injury woes grew Saturday when right-fielder Alex Rios sprained his right ankle in his first trip to the plate. Rios, a former Jay, was unable to continue his at-bat and left the game. He was replaced by Daniel Robertson. X-rays were negative and Rios was listed as day-to-day. It was also a painful first inning for Jays catcher Dioner Navarro, who fouled a ball off the top of his shin but was able to continue. The Jays opened the scoring in their half of the fourth with Johnson doubling home Rasmus, who had singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch. One out later, Johnson went to third on a successful Anthony Gose bunt. Munenori Kawaskis infield single made it 2-0, with Toronto leaving two on the bases. Toronto added to its lead in the seventh on consecutive singles by Cabrera, Bautista and Navarro. After Rasmus reached first on a fielders choice, Johnson brought Bautista home on a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. Brett Cecil and McGowan followed Stroman in the eighth, when the Rangers finally got on the board via an Elvis Andrus RBI single. Cecil had opened the inning by yielding a walk and a single. McGowan seemed to have the situation in control when he struck out the ever-dangerous Adrian Beltre with two outs. But Beltre made it to first base to load the bases thanks to a Navarro passed ball and McGowan found himself needing another out. The Jays have won six of their last seven series against the Rangers in Toronto. Saturdays win gave them a chance to make it seven of eight. Cameron Wake Jersey . Sources tell TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger that the team is quietly gauging interest on the Senators captain, though Spezza has a limited no-trade clause and carries a large contract. Walt Aikens Jersey . The struggling New Orleans Pelicans were simply overmatched. Crawford hit seven 3s on his way to 24 points, and the Clippers beat the Pelicans 123-110 on Monday night. "We understand what we do well. ST. JOHNS, N.L. -- A three-goal first period started things off right for the St. Johns IceCaps Friday night as they downed the Binghamton Senators 6-2 in American Hockey League action. "I really liked our start," IceCaps head coach Keith McCambridge said. "I thought we came out and set the tone. We were able to get on the board first and then build off that. It was a strong game against an excellent team." John Albert and Kael Mouillierat each scored two goals to lead St. Johns. McCambridge was happy to get star performances from both forwards, and said he has been impressed with their play of late. "Mouillierat has been a really good offensive piece for us all season long," he said. "Hes a cornerstone on the power play and 5-on-5 hes a solid two-way player that can create offence. And, John Albert has really taken his game to the next level. The speed he comes through the neutral zone with is hard to contain." Mouillierat enjoyed scoring two in front of the home crowd and setting the tone early for the IceCaps. "Its awesome," Mouillierat said. "You always want to contribute. Ive been trying to focus on shooting the puck a little more, lucky enough, a few went in for me tonight." The forward wasnt surprised by the style of game, which featured a lot of quick breaks and a few breakaways. "Last time we played them it was a high-flying game too," he said. "t;They have a lot of firepower over there. Laremy Tunsil Jersey. We tried to limit their chances and take advantage of ours. Adam Lowry and Eric ODell also scored for the IceCaps (33-19-4). Buddy Robinson and Jean-Gabriel Pageau replied for Binghamton (33-18-4). IceCaps goalie Michael Hutchinson made 26 saves, while his Binghamton counterpart, Nathan Lawson, stopped 28 shots. Lowry opened the scoring, putting the IceCaps ahead on a backhander five-hole in front of the net at the 5:09 mark of the first period. Albert added to the lead 12:21 into the first, cleaning up a Jason Jaffray rebound on the power play. Thirty seconds later, Mouillierat put the IceCaps up 3-0, finishing off a pass out front, beating Lawson high. Mouillierat added his second of the game with a high wrister 10:18 into the second, from the right faceoff dot on the power play. Albert added his second of the game, stripping a defender of the puck and scoring on a breakaway after a quick backhand-to-forehand move with 31 seconds left in the second period.
